Do people go to the holodecks to have sex

with holograms?

If so, do they make sure the computer doesn't record the activity and that safeties are online?

on a related note I've seen episodes where people 'eat' holographic food. How does that work? It can't be very filling

Yes, holodecks have been used for sexual purposes. Throughout DS9 it's frequently indicated Quark is running a holographic brothel. Not to mention Riker's "I'll be on the holodeck" comment after a sexual tension filled scene in The Perfect Mate would seem to indicate he's not going there to act out Shakespeare.
do they make sure ... safeties are online?
Safeties are usually online by default. Though I imagine if they're kinky and enjoy rough play they might very well deactivate the safeties. The question is, does your safe word just stop your partner or will it trigger the holodeck to end the program?

Obviously it's not real food, they just "eat" it to absorb themselves in the role they're playing. Or maybe the shit pixels out later, I don't know.

I'm sure they have to. I mean, you're out in space for a very long time and there are only so many people on board. I could only imagine someone telling the computer "Run program...BDSM, enable safe-word".

I'm wondering if when you eat you'll feel full, but when you leave you're back on hungry because it disappeared.

but in Homeward the primatives weren't supposed to know that they were journeying through a holodeck, and yet didn't seem to notice they were eating food made up of photons

I've always wondered, why do holodecks even have the option to turn safeties off? Why would you want a holodeck that could harm it's users, unless you're a sociopath like Worf?

It does come in handy if you're cut off from actual weapons and need to take care of intruders. Especially if those intruders are Borg drones who have adapted to the latest phaser settings, they apparently can't adapt against Tommy guns.
Didn't Tuvok bang his fake wife when he went through Vulcan heat?
Yes, as did Vorik.

I'm sure nobody questions what was really going on with Barkley...

Y'know, just thinking on this subject really really makes you feel sorry for Rom. After all he was the one that had to go in there with a mop after all was said and done come the harsh light of morning. if you ever wonder how working for O'Brien as the top toilet maintenance man seemed like a good career choice... yeah. It clearly really was.

DS9 proves that holodecks are used for this kind of, erm, relaxing exercises. Still, I have a hard time imagining this stuff going on on the good old Ent-D ....

It's always difficult for me, seeing Riker, or some other cool character I like, using the Holodeck for sexual purposes. They don't need it ...! Barclay, or Geordi can't get laid, so it's like ... the bathroom stall with a porno mag ... or the holodeck. But it's just so lame using it for sex, as I say, I really don't enjoy seeing the cool characters going in there to 'get their cookies.' When Riker falls for Minuet, in fact ... I just "edit" those factors out, in my mind and pretend they never happened.

Why? Do so called "cool people" never masturbate?
And it's a hell of a lot more discrete than sleeping around on the ship, especially if you are the first officer or dare I say it... the Captain? You don't think Picard only concentrates on the crimes and not the romance as Dixon Hill?
There are roughly 1000 people on the ship. That is not that many potential partners to choose from for a steady relationship.

Yes, the cool people masturbate, occasionally, surely they must. But I don't see how getting it on with a computer-controlled trick of light is preferable, much less more "discrete," in any way. If a character wants to Cage the Elephant in their quarters ... who's to know, really? Except Ship Security, if they spy on you. But once someone decides to make it with an electronic blow up doll in a public facility ... the computer's certainly going to know. And anyone working on the holodeck's programme could surely find out. And how is the accuracy of the sensation of bumping uglies with an illusion even tested? Does someone have to 'report' their findings, until it's finely tuned? Oh, Lordy ... no. No, no. It's best to avoid the holodeck for sexual purposes, especially amongst the hip crowd. It could open a whole other can of worms. It's just not worth it ... it's really not.

i imagine there was probably stringent 'safe search' measures in place otherwise the crew would've got up to all kinds of wrong on the holodeck!
