Did anyone like the bald Romulans?

^^ gosh, yikes. The ridges didn't have to be THAT extreme.

Although that hair could be cool on JJverse klingons. MAYBE

Only makeup/tattooing, actually. (A behind-the-scenes photo of Scottie Thompson, who played Nero's wife, in full costume and makeup.)

Hey thanks! I've been looking for a clear image of Nero's wife since the movie came out.

I didn't look at the photo when originally posted myself, but I have to say, my concerns about Nero's motivations have significantly diminished. In fact, death to the Federation! ;)

When I first saw the promo image of Nero...I thought these were not only future Romulans but from far in the future, perhaps a degenerated sect of Romulans that were from a desperate time for the Empire that were going to time travel back to the past to attempt to change things for the better. Suffice it to say I thought the designs were fascinating. I didn't mind the bald Romulans at all. Always found it restricting that all Romulans seemed to have the same damn hair style on the planet lol.

Actually, considering that Romulans don't follow logic, I have no idea why they always had the same hair style, other than to perhaps remind us of their link to Vulcans. But I'm sure the signature pointy ears were more than enough. A bowl cut might be logical, but I can't imagine any race choosing it for style purposes

The TOS Romulans didn't (for the most part, anyway). Perhaps by the time of TNG, however, the Romulan Empire had evolved into a totalitarian state and everyone had to conform...

It's worth noting that one of the Romulan leaders Spock meets with (seen in the mind-meld when he goes "I promised the Romulans that I would save their planet") had a bowl cut.

I didnt even know they were romulans until they directly said it. They lacked a familiarity that i would have really liked.

I loved this new Romulan look; truly badass!!! Also Eric Bana was a genius choice as he just oozes menace and forboding in every scene that he is in!!! If there is one bad point its the speech/script. When we see him talking to Captain Pike via the screen, he introduces himself thus; Hello!!!! And then wait for it, HI!!!! Lol!!! He sounded for a split second like a californian dude!!! (although the accent IS american!) i think it would have been fitting if he just sulked and said; GREETINGS FEDERATION SCUM!!!! Ha ha ha!!! Thats just my opinion. But these Romulans are the baddest aliens since, predators!!! Would love to see the two of them go at it!!!

The Romulans looked cool as baldies, but they should have had goatees as well.

I'm just sayin'. ;)

And it makes sense that they were bald. We know that their tattoos are the result of scarring as a normal Romulan grief ritual (but the difference is, with normal Romulans, such tats are temporary and fade over time; Nero and his bunch did it permanently), so it stands to reason that head shaving would also be a part of that.

I thought they looked pretty cool with the shaved heads. I mean, they're in an industrial job, mining, so they would shave their heads out of necessity to avoid hair entanglements and to keep sweat from building up. Plus it made them look even more like tough bad guys. As others have mentioned, its better then that Beatle's mop top thing they had going on in TNG.

I liked their clothing too. It added to the feeling that these were not arch villains, just a bunch of blue collar Romie workers caught up is events bigger then themselves because of their psycho captain, who also was just a normal guy who happened to be captain of a big ass ship when he went nuts.

i think yall are missing the point these were blue collar working class romulans , over worked and under paid having more incommon with the remans than with the privilaged members of romulas prime .
they were minors so they would had more dealings with the remans than their own people .
the romulan empire had more in common with ancient rome than the ethics of vulcan logic so it could be said that nero and his crew were free citizans of the romulan empire they were simply second class or lower citizens

I loved this movie's take on the Rommies. The TNG ridge was a horrible mistake, one I've yet to see a good explanation for.

Indeed. I always got the implication from "The Neutral Zone" that mystery of the ridges was to be later explored but got dropped along the way, as I think it was somehow tied to the "Borg" before they were rethought as cybernetic beings.

In any event, ridges were dumb.

TNG ridge: actors not wanting to shave half their eyebrows. Made them look like Frankenstein's monster. :rommie: Always hated it. Loved the new-look Romulans!

Talking of ST XI, I take it that it's true about Wil Wheaton doing the voices of all the Romulan comm chatter we hear aboard the Narada? (And possibly at least one speaking role)
