[Update: We’ve now learned from trusted sources four more actresses who are testing for the role of Domino in Deadpool 2, in addition to the six we reported previously: Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire), Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black), Eve Hewson (The Knick), and Kelly Rohrbach (Baywatch). Our original story follows below.]

While the sequel doesn’t yet have a firm release date, development is moving right along on Deadpool 2, and director Tim Miller and the film’s producers are now looking towards casting a key female role. Sources close to the production exclusively tell Collider that testing has begun for the character of Domino, and the actresses under consideration include Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond), Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), and Sylvia Hoeks (Overspel). There could be other actresses included in the mix, but sources tell us that at least these six performers have tested or are going to test for the role.

Director Tim Miller leaves Deadpool 2

EXCLUSIVE: After a series of creative differences between Deadpool director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds, Miller has exited Deadpool 2. He hadn’t formally signed a deal to continue, but he was developing the script and by all accounts had planned to return behind the camera for a film Fox will release in 2018.

I’ve confirmed from studio insiders this exit was over mutual creative differences, but this all ended amicably and the studio is very high on Miller and the expectation is the filmmaker will jump right into another big Fox project: Influx, an adaptation of the Daniel Suarez novel that has a Mark Bomback script and is expected to launch a film trilogy.

This will come as a blow to fans of the original film, an audacious franchise launch that came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest movie success stories in recent years, and another major franchise for Emma Watts’ division at Fox. And everyone had a hand in shaping its unusual tone. That includes Miller — a VFX wiz hired to make his directorial debut on the project way back in 2011 — to writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and Reynolds, who first played ‘The Merc With A Mouth’ in the widely panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine (they sewed shut his mouth so he couldn’t speak) and lobbied hard for another chance on a movie that really captured the inherent fun in the comic book.

This really sucks. I wonder what went wrong? I hope this doesn't derail the entire movie and become a souless project like X-men 3 or X-men: Origins Wolverine!:(

Stay away from this movie, Brett Ratner!!!!

After reading some of that, I kinda have to side with Reynolds a bit. Kyle Chandler would have been a really lame casting for Cable compared to other potential candidates, as well as moving away from Deadpool's style of comedy in order to make the sequel more "stylized," whatever that means.

Though I totally understand why Miller would want to get out of there, all things considered. But then I'm also one of those people who think directors get waaaaay too much control and credit for movies.

It sucks that he's leaving, but Kyle Chandler would have been a horrible choice for Cable. Reynolds seems to really care about the character of Deadpool, so I'd honestly trust his Deadpool related ideas over Miller's anyway.

Welp, it was nice while it lasted. :(

As perfect for the role as Reynolds is, without the right director this just isn't going to work and from what I gather, Miller was the driving creative force behind the first movie.

It's rarely a good sign if an original creative team of a massive success breaks up when it's time to do the sequel so i'm a little bit anxious. However Reynolds lives and breathes Deadpool so i'm still confident that we will get a good sequel, the original writers are still on board so there's that.

Agreed. I know movie directors are far more important to the development process than TV directors are, but I still suspect writers are underestimated and undervalued on the movie side. Take a movie like Amazing Spider-Man 2 - whose stylings do you feel more; Mark Webb's, or Orci+Kurtzman? So I'd advise fans to chill about all this, but that's just moi.

Interesting to hear Miller and Reynolds apparently haven't been getting along, but that's life, I guess. As one who enjoyed Deadpool okay but less than most, and a huge Kyle Chander fan, I'm ambivalent about him in the sequel; I suspect his talent would be largely wasted in costuming and makeup.

Tim Miller: You're going to get violated again in the butt

Ryan Reynolds: No I'm not.

*Miller quits*

It would have been even worse if Ryan walked and Miller stayed. Reynolds is the face of Deadpool.

I wonder if Reynolds was gunning for Scott Lang as Cable

I dunno, I kind of feel like maybe this is the point we'll look back on and say, "If only Miller stayed on."

I can see 'Wade Reynolds' being a lot less interesting the second time around...especially if that's going to be the main focus going forward. Let's hope the wave of good-will to Deadpool hasn't gone to his head. Was he ever a real draw before now? Did people make sure to go see the new Ryan Reynolds movie, or is he one of those people who just happens to get a lot of work despite people only kind of liking them? Eighty percent of his filmography seems to be made up of stinkers and movies you've never heard of.

Still, fingers crossed! ;)

Reynolds has been in a lot of bad movies but more often than not he was the best/only good thing in them. That plus the fact that he seriously loves Deadpool gives me confidence that the sequel will work out.

I remember when the original Ant-Man director left and a lot of people predicted failure for it, but it ended up being awesome, to the point where I'm glad we got the version they went with and not whatever version the original guy wanted that obviously didn't fit with the MCU. Honestly, I care more about who is writing a movie anyway. Bad writers hurt a movie a lot more the bad/mediocre directing in my opinion, so if we're getting the same writers, and Ryan Reynolds is still really into playing Deadpool, I think the director isn't all that important to the movie's quality, unless its a really bad director like, say, Brett Ratner.

IF that is true then it may have been better that Miller left. If Deadpool is the result of Reynolds vision of the character and how he should translate to the movie screen then i'm happy that this vision was kept in control.

I have seen Kyle Chandler in some roles previously, mostly TV stuff and he's a perfectly fine actor but not exactly Cable material when i think about it (but then again who thought RDJ would be perfect as Tony Stark?).

Stephen Lang would be an awesome choice however.. he fits the visual to a T apart from the massive physique Cable has in the comics but then again the comicbook version are all unrealistic body types and movies have ignored this wisely as only Wrestlers or Bodybuilders would come close to that and they are not usually known for their acting abilities. So my first choice for Cable is Stephen Lang so let's keep fingers crossed.

I think Lang may be too obvious a choice for Cable. It's wise not to get too caught up in which actors would look good cosplaying as a given character and instead think about who would by best actually playing said character.
The make-up people have gotten very good at what they do and they can really transform a face if need be.

Not that I have a better suggestions mind. I honestly don't have a handle on Cable as a character beyond some vague memories of the 90's cartoon.

Except from, like, everyone? Dude was basically Tony Stark in real life long before the movie was even a glint in some writer's eyes.

I liked Liefeld's mock-up of John Hamm myself. He has the height and shoulders to pull it off, and muscle mass could be added to his costume (rather than having both arms sleeveless). He has the ability to play both comedic and dry parts with equal ease, he has enough charisma to keep up with Reynolds, and he's undoubtedly available considering how many cameos he makes all over the place.

.

Who amongst the general audience outside movie enthusiasts knew about RDJ before Marvel? He was a known actor in the 90s but his private life nearly torpedoed his career for good. He was making movies but he was headed for eternal B list status as a recognizable name but not leading man for summer blockbusters.

I was very sceptic when i first heard the news that he was cast. I knew him from Ally McBeal where he was very good and from some earlier movies but i, and many others, lost sight of him after that but when i first saw him in a promo poster with beard and business suit and that cocky smile i was instantly sold.

Marvel made him one of the top A listers currently and this is why Marvel is so good because they have that lucky hand to nearly always choose pitch perfect casting.. every main role they have cast has been a tremendous hit and they defined that role forever so much that recasting it is nearly out of the question so i'm very positive that Marvel will make the right decision when casting the pivotal role of Cable even if the decision may be strange at first and comes from a totally unexpected direction.

Except that Marvel won't have anything to do with the casting decisions for Cable. That movie will be entirely FOX's baby.

Lots and lots and lots of people...

I don't know why you think your personal ignorance on a subject translates to general ignorance, but that's kind of what we're talking about here. He wasn't an unknown actor (off the top of my head in the 21st century and prior to Iron Man there was Ally McBeal, Gothika, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), and nearly everyone who was familiar with Iron Man and Tony Stark (which was probably larger than you're going to try to play it off as) knew, upon hearing of the casting, that he was pretty much a perfect choice. That includes Internet forums at the time, and yes, I remember that period quite well. And again, your personal ignorance/skepticism not withstanding.

So yes, in answer to your original question of "who thought RDJ would be perfect as Tony Stark?", it was pretty much everyone who had heard of the casting.
