Could the Baul be Ferengi?

Are the Ba'ul Ferengi?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm undecided

See, everybody hones in on the "aperitif" aspect of the relationship.

What better way to have complete control over a race of beings, than getting them to wholly believe that they are used as a food source by a "superior' enemy.
(something the Romulans would not have a problem with using as a control method)

We have seen the MU Empire use Kelpians as a fine dining experience, but so far, all we've seen of the Ba'ul is that they transport the Kelpians away from their villages.

Nothing in our experience indicates that the Ba'ul actually DO use the Kelpians as livestock.
All the Kelpians know is that they get taken away never to be seen again.
Apparently (up to this point) no Kelpian has come back with the confirmation saying...
"HEY, THEY ARE EATING US!"

I don't think they're going to bring back the Ferengi in that manner, especially with the tone of the show so far. Ferengi as threatening villains isn't happening.

Found another possible explanation for why the Ferengi may have called themselves the Ba'ul.

We don't know anything about if there was an original predator species on Kaminar. If there was, it could be that they either left Kaminar or went extinct. Maybe when the Ferengi arrived, they saw a lucrative opportunity and impersonated them.

But that still leaves us with a rather large ? as to what value the Kelpians could possibly have to the Ferengi.
I rather doubt they would just collect them up and turn them free somewhere else.
And until the "cattle" aspect of Kelpian life is actually confirmed to exist beyond the Mirror Universe version we saw, I rather doubt that the Ferengi would be involved directly with an established slave market.
(even their naked women weren't considered slaves, just as housekeepers and sexual playthings)
I could see them finding some way to get involved in the monetizing of slavery, but never as actual 'Slavers' themselves.

isn't quark giving a rather big speach about the differences between terran and ferengi history at some point?

... and why on earth would the powers that be shoehorn existing species into something when they can easily invent new ones tailored to the purpose?

The writers of Discovery apparently like bringing up references to obscure canon issues. The dialogue between Picard and Groppler Zorn might be another one.

And what i have forgot to mention before in my reasoning is the fact that Saru learnt English with the help of Ba'ul technology. I guess the technology of intergalactic traders like the Ferengi might be perfect for such a thing.

Another thing is that the place where the Ba'ul beam up Kelpians looks actually similar to something Ferengi might have built.

I believe you're reaching here, but only time will tell.

who says he learned english that way? he communicated by means of ba'ul technology. and he knew he got an answer but i'm anything but sure he understood that answer.

in my book that's the best of the shorts

... and if (very big if) that communicator is ferengi tech than the ferengi are even more remodelled than the klingons (might as well be 9 feet tall with three heads)

Maybe learning the language is the wrong term, but i can't see any better technology for communicating with unknown species than either Federation tech or that of traders like the Ferengi who deal with many different lifeforms.

to me that ba'ul thingy was a long range communicator with a display - totally unnecessary for saru to understand what HELLO means. seeing it meant he got an answer.

I'd like for the Baul to be the race of whoever McCoy was trying to charter a space flight with in TSFS. "Place you name, price I name, otherwise bargain no!"

I wonder which color tastes like ganglia?

3. Remember the talk about the Ferengi eating their business partners during "Encounter at Farpoint".
The showrunners of TNG "adjusted" the Ferengi after season 1 and into season 2, making them less ferociously dangerous by the 3rd season, and instead making them annoyingly dangerous.

Independent of the Kelpian discussion, the Ferengi in TNG - Rascals were planning to use the crew as slave labor, and the ones in ENT - Acquisition were planning to sell the female crew members as slaves, so they have no problem with taking or trading slaves.

Furthermore, Quark was painting a rather rosy picture of Ferengi society in his argument with Sisko in DS9 - The Jem'Hadar. Ferengi women have no rights, are required to remain naked and subservient, must perform labor without pay, can't organize, can't get an education, etc. They're slaves, at least before Zek's and Rom's reforms start taking hold.
