https://www.loc.gov/programs/nation...stry/complete-national-film-registry-listing/
This is the link for the page listing all the films that have been accepted into the national film preservation board. This year's additions have just recently been announced, including such films as Die Hard, Dumbo, Field of Dreams, Superman, The Goonies, & Titanic, which shall now be preserved in our national archives.
On that site, in the menu to the left, is a link to a page with tons of films that have not yet been accepted, among which are award winners, classics, & popular successes, like The Hunt For Red October, Braveheart, True Grit, A Clockwork Orange & The Poseidon Adventure.
Also included in that menu is the link for making nominations, which directs you to an online form. Deadline for nominating next year's additions is 9/15/18. Individuals can make up to 50 nominations per year. The pre-requisites for a nomination are that it must be at least 10 years old & be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”. I'd assume any titles included on their "Not Yet Named" list have already been nominated, but have just not been able to get selected, thus far.
However, there are films, I'm sure, which are on neither list, that likely haven't even been nominated yet. I figure THIS crowd is the perfect group for doing so. I, myself have just nominated two from Terry Gilliam, who's never had a film selected to the registry.
I nominated Monty Python And The Holy Grail, (1975) & his absolute sci-fi- classic, Brazil (1985), which I'm literally stunned has not even been mentioned anywhere on there. It was both a monumental achievement in film, & a very public scandal, over being re-released in an edited form, much like Blade Runner (1982) had also suffered, & which IS included in the registry.
I'd encourage all of us to try to think of films which deserve to be nominated, & do so.
Incidentally, even though I see many of them in the "Not Yet Named" list, not one Star Trek film has ever been selected for the archive registry, while both Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back HAVE been. I thought that might get your attention lol
