College Football 2024

Recruiting this cycle in both football and basketball has been wild af. Tons of schools who haven't spent big are doing so right now because they think this is their last chance to purchase a roster outright. If some reforms happen and NIL deals go through a clearinghouse it will clamp down on a lot of things and guys like Nico and Madden (who didn't actually fulfill many or any NIL obligations, would likely find themselves in NCAA trouble if they accepted pay for it whether a collective pursued reimbursement or not -- would be the same thing as the old school "paper jobs" used to pay players).

Whatever happens needs to happen yesterday. College Football, in particular, is losing its identity. And that identity is the only thing that made it special. IDGAF about the NFL and prob. won't about college football if nothing changes.

NCAA should be ashamed that it has come to this because of their own greed. They could've created a fairer system decades ago, but didn't care about the athletes only cashing in.

What started as a fight to have control over licensing their own images has straight up turned into no holds barred pay for play and a free agency system without binding contracts. I understand why the NCAA was reluctant on image licensing (schools sure as shit would've done smaller scale versions of what we're all doing now) but refusing to adapt to things like wanting to be able to sell autographed images, earn a 500 dollar check from EA for being in a game (unless you're Arch Manning), and allowing kids to earn from their own youtube channels etc. and then following that refusal up with an absolute ABDICATION of responsibility when SCOTUS ruled on NIL has turned cfb into a nightmare.

People forget when that ruling happened the NCAA told schools to follow their own state laws on NIL. They threw up their hands and ran to congress who at that time wouldn't save them. In that time frame, collectives and agents went wild (to no one's surprise). And when their plea to congress failed the NCAA finally passed a few rules. But then just to prove how erratic and dysfunctional they were, they tried to punish schools for doing what they told them to do before they bothered coming back to act like a damn governing body and actually pass rules.

The NIL era has proven at least two things: 1. College sports absolutely need a governing body and probably some form of anti-trust exemption so that they can regulate 2. the NCAA is probably too dysfunctional at this point to be that governing body.

At the very least, the NCAA should have its house cleaned, tore down and rebuilt from the ground up.

It should be the NCAA in name only.

Agree. I hate that it has come to that because I *do* think that it's an opportunity for the wrong players to grab power and ruin things even more. But I don't see how the NCAA can maintain control over anything at this point. College sports are in absolute crisis across the board. And if cfb separates or the p4 form their own body that's a death knell for cfb and many other sports that depend on it.

On a sidenote... I'm actually happy that Nico's replacement is a QB who clawed his way up from JUCO to play at App St and joined a crappy UCLA team to pursue one final year but instead wound up on a team that just went to the playoffs with a fanbase willing to make him absolute legend for life if the only thing he ever does in orange is try hard this year.
