Col/Gen Jonathan "Jack" O'Neill

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
I've just noticed on a couple of Stargate sites that O'Neills full name isn't just Jack O'Neill but Jonathan O'Neill and I think the Jack is either a middle name or nickname. I was just wondering if this has ever been mentioned on screen as I can't recall ever hearing or seeing it being used or if it's just background information?

It seems strange to call him Jonathan because after all the years we've heard him called Jack he doesn't quite look like a Jonathan.

^I'm digging through the depths of my memory here, but I think the name John J. O'Neill was on his ID card in "Fragile Balance" which just confuses things further.

However, MGM's site for Stargate SG-1 says Jonathan as does the Sci-Fi Channel website.

Jack is an alternative name for John, just like Bob is an alternative for Robert, or Bill for William. I guess it might also apply for Jonathan as well.

To my knowledge, the only times this has been addressed is in the end credits for the original Stargate movie they have him listed as "Col. Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil". Then in the SG-1 episode Entity we see O'Neill's service record where he is listed as "Col. John O'Neill."

I recall seeing Johnathan in the Atlantis Pilot, on the wine bottle that goes through the event horizon.

No, it wasn't:

For the record, also, O'Neill's SGC security pass:

I did check the credits on IMDB for Stargate and see they do have the Jonathan name but if this is his actual name then why do you suppose the PTB of Stargate called him Jack and never aknowledge the Jonathan? You'd think that for official purposes (within Stargate I mean) O'Neill would've been introduced as Jonathan O'Neill rather than Jack O'Neill?

As stated above, Jack is an alternative for John. ie. John F. Kennedy was known as "Jack Kennedy" to those close to him.

You know, there's just something about the way it's written on the tag of the bottle in the Atlantis pilot that makes "Jack" look like "Josh" for some reason.

So, any guesses as to what his middle initial stands for?

James?
Jeffrey?
Jordan?
Jeremy?
Jacob-Jingleheimer-Schmidt? :p
