Christopher Nolan Film Rankings

Batman Begins - A
Inception - B+
Prestige - B
Dark Knight - B (A for effort)
Momento - C+
Dark Knight Rises- C

TDKR merely wrapped up the trilogy, it didn't elevate it thematically. It feels largely unfinished, and there's too many plot contrivances where there should be real drama. Still a good time, better the second viewing

1. The Prestige (A+)
2. Inception (A-)
3. The Dark Knight (B+)
4. Insomnia (B)
5. Batman Begins (B-)
6. Memento (B-)
Haven't seen TDKR yet but I doubt it will dethrone Prestige or Inception, two of my all-time favourites. (Well, they are all pretty awesome movies...)

Memento (A)
Batman Begins (B+)
Following (B+)
Inception (B+)
The Dark Knight (B)
Insomnia (B)
The Prestige (B-)

I haven't seen The Dark Knight Rises yet (tickets for it on IMAX this Tuesday); haven't seen the first two Batman films in more than a year. So far, Nolan hasn't made a film that I've disliked, although I'd say that only Memento is a classic.

Memento
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight Rises
Inception
The Dark Knight
Insomnia
The Prestige
Following

1) Inception
2) The Prestige
3) The Dark Knight
4) The Dark Knight Rises
5) Batman Begins
6) Memento
7) Insomnia

Did not see Following (yet).

  1. The Prestige
  2. The Dark Knight
  3. Batman Begins
  4. The Dark Knight Rises
  5. Momento (doesn't hold up under repeated viewings)
  6. Inception (completely predictable)

1. The Prestige. It's a trick, but it's a really well-done, well-acted trick. Jackman, Bale, & Caine have never been better. I also love Andy Serkis as Tesla's assistant. "It amazes me how many of you newspaper writers can't read my sign!"

2. Batman Begins. The one & only Batman movie that is actually about Batman! While the broad strokes of his origin aren't necessarily that interesting, the details that Nolan fills in are fantastic. Plus, you've got great performers like Liam Neeson, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Gary Oldman, a seriously underrated Katie Holmes, and Christian Bale back when he seemed to actually give a damn.

3. The Dark Knight. It's less a Batman movie than it is a crime drama about Jim Gordon & Harvey Dent trying to take down the Joker, with Batman appearing for the requisite action set pieces. But Gary Oldman & Heath Ledger certainly make it worthwhile.

4. Memento. It's not my favorite movie but it's a clever conceit. And it yielded some of the funniest parodies in My Big Fat Independent Movie. ("What am I doing?... Oh, I'm masturbating... No, I'm getting a handjob... I'm getting a handjob from a guy?... No, I'm getting fucked up the ass with a reacharound... Well, at least I won't be able to remember this later.":guffaw:)

5. Inception. I'm not sure whether I should applaud or roll my eyes at how the ambiguousness of the movie's ending seems to be the whole point. The whole thing seems more like a video game than a dream. But the overall style is good and I like most of the characters, except for Cobb & his wife.

6. The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan seems to have mostly lost interest in Batman. He could be replaced with pretty much any masked vigilante without having to change too much. All of the characters speak in broad ideological statements. There's even more intellectual bullshit in this movie than there is in all of Nolan's previous films combined. Christian Bale & Anne Hathaway have absolutely zero chemistry with each other. The only thing keeping this movie from the bottom of the list is that it's still, in some small way, Batman.

7. Insomnia. It's one of the most decorated casts that Nolan has ever assembled. It's actually pretty underrated for a crime thriller. The only reason why it's at the bottom is because it's not quite as ambitious as Nolan's other films. (Also, I think this is the rare film that doesn't have any cast connections to any of Nolan's other films, which makes it feel more like the odd man out.)

Of the ones I've seen:

The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
(the Batman movies are all pretty close together quality wise so the rankings aren't all that far apart)

Inception
The Prestige

For me:

1. The Prestige (one of my all time favorites)
2. The Dark Knight (it's very heavy handed with it's symbolism, but damn, Gary Oldman and Heath Ledger...)
3. The Dark Knight Rises (maybe I'll rate it lower than Batman Begins if you ask me in a year)
4. Batman Begins (while it wasn't as great on rewatch as I remembered it, Liam Neeson is still the man)
5. Inception (amazing cast, but I'm used to less plot holes from Nolan)

Have only seen Memento and Insomnia once, so I can't say for sure about those...
