Christmas viewing...

My girlfriend and I have been watching
a film called Christmas Story(2007) in the past few years.
It is a nice film, though I doubt many here have seen it.
Its worth watching, though:)

Trailer:http://youtu.be/xJwwHUNyVkI
Imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0772176/

This year I am planning to buy few more Christmas films to my collection, not sure which ones yet, though.

I watched this based on your recommendation and I'm glad I did. This was a wonderful take on the origin of Santa Claus and I really like it's down-to-earth approach to the legend and mythology. Of course it's not definitive, but it was so much more satisfying than the excessive glitz and schmaltz we usually get from the Hollywood Christmas films, particularly when they deal with Santa. Hollywood has done Santa justice only once, in the original 1947 film "Miracle On 34th Street." Pretty much everything else in the vein of the Tim Allen "The Santa Clause" films and "The Polar Express" and the like is just way over-the-top.

This is actually a Finnish film, but it's eminently watchable with the English dubbing. There is no time frame stated explicitly in the story, but it could easily be set sometime around the 18th century give or take. And it lays out the story in such a way that it's credible how a legend and its elements could be started. The ending is rather ambiguous because we really don't know Nicholas' ultimate fate, which actually serves the story and the eventual legend.

I enjoyed the music, the low-key approach and the pervasive heartwarming charm. I'm glad that I've been able to make this part of my Christmas library.

Thanks.

So far I've got through some Morecambe And Wise, IM Jolly, A Christmassy Ted, the two Time Gentlemen Please Xmas episodes, some Steptoe & Son ones, Blackadder's Christmas Carol, several Dr Who Xmas specials, Bottom "Holy", A Very Merry Muppet Christmas, Lethal Weapon, this year's Warehouse 13 Xmas special...

Obviously Xmas Eve will be the Patrick Stewart Christmas Carol, and Die Hard, but the Muppet Christmas Carol will be in there too, as will The Bishop's Wife...

TCM has been running a fun special on the history of Christmas movies, which strangely overlooks "Holiday Inn."

I noticed that, too. People act like it doesn't exist anymore. I think the "Lincoln's Birthday" number has it banished to the back shelf from now on.

two more to add:

Robbie The Reindeer
this was very funny i think

this one's just a christmas episode but it's still really good!
Bump in the Night, "Twas the night before Bumpy"
i liked this one so much from beginning to end. in my opinion, it's one of the best i've seen.

We love Christmas movies. For me, the Christmas season doesn't start until I play "Christmas Vacation" and then "White Christmas".
I bolded the movies I love the most.
Wow! Thats some list. Will you have time for anything else during the season? :)

We put our tree up the first week of November, so we start the season a little early.
Seriously, I am hardcore Christmas. I love the holiday.

Thanks for the list J, I do love the songs from 'A Year without Santa Clause. [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRQYfwXKZxA[/yt]

The blackface number is certainly problematic these days, but, for the purposes of the Xmas special, you'd think they'd at least mention that "Holiday Inn" introduced the song "White Christmas." You could show a clip from the Christmas scenes without showing any of the Lincoln's Birthday scenes.

Watched the 1951 A Christmas Carol this evening. Still Awesome! :techman: And yesterday after dinner I watched the 1970 animated Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Also still good. I love the music in some of those animated specials.

We watched Santa Claus is Coming to Town last night. Today we've watched It's A Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Miracle On 34th Street and A Christmas Carol ( 1951).

Christmas Eve we watched the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol, followed by the new Christmas episode of Chuck: "Chuck vs. the Santa Suit."

Do they still have the yule log? We would tune that in on NBC while we ate turkey. It gave you a warm secure feeling inside. Not like our fireplace which almost caused a fire and smoked us out.

My thoughts exactly. I did notice that it was on the other day (the 23rd) but at 9 am, when I was having breakfast. Got to watch a little of the beginning, but that was it.

I watched most of A Christmas Story with hubby and my parents tonight, but Dad can't really follow movies any more. Hubby and I were reciting some of the lines in unison; we've seen it THAT many times.
