Cast the Characters of Trek Fanfiction

While I was writing season 1 of EVA-Trek, I thought of the series like it was an animated show, so I routinely did voice casting for each role so I had a good idea for the character's voice.

Outside of the main cast, which is a mix of the actors from the Netflix dub of the original Evangelion show and the Amazon dub of the Rebuild films, and cameos of characters from other movies/shows and the Trek franchise, I brought in an eclectic mix:

Episode 101 - "New Way Home"
Shinji's Grandparents: Mike Farrell and Loretta Swit

Episode 103 - "Fraternity"
Mr. Aida: Garrett Wang
Mr. Suzuhara: Vaughn Armstrong

Episode 107 - "Walking After You"
Braelar Irado, Magistrate of Klaestron IV: Brendan Gleeson

Episode 110 - "Resolve"
Brenad, a Lurian: J.G. Hertzler
Altand, a Lurian: Jason Mantzoukas
Lurian Guard: Dennis "Danger" Madalone

Episode 111 - "Times Like These"
Technician Barnes: Donald Glover
Technician Nadir: Danny Pudi

Episode 112 - "Good Grief"
Andorian Barfly: Fred Tatasciore
Bajoran Monk: Amanda Winn-Lee

Episode 117 - "Make it Right"
Prelate Iretalcs, a Brenlaui: John Fleck

Episode 119 - "All My Life"
Gul Recad: Ray Chase
Lallik: John Goodman

Episode 124 - "If Ever"
Lt. Kurz Weber: Todd Haberkorn
Ensign Th'Lan: Jack Quaid

At the moment I'm writing the last part of Episode 15 and have added a new character to The Star Beagle Adventures - commander of Deep Space 13, Captain Phil Phlox. The half-human, half-denobulan is the oldest captain in Star Fleet at 178 years old, which would be middle-aged for a denobulan, but somewhat older than middle-age for a hybrid.

The son of Dr. Phlox and Commander Elizabeth Cutler, Phil Phlox spent well over 100 years in and out of Star Fleet, most often as a professor at Star Fleet academy and has doctorates in medicine, cultural anthropology, chemistry, agriculture and engineering. His personality is light-hearted, with a fondness for bad puns, classic movies, Reggae music, dancing, and gourmet foods.

In addition to his service in Star Fleet, Phil Phlox served two 6-year terms on the Federation Council. He re-joined Star Fleet at the behest of his friend, Council Leader Ushi Irons, for the purpose of taking command of DS13.

Who better to portray the son of Phlox than the 64-year-old John Billingsley?

With some subtle prosthetics to hint at his denobulan ancestry - but Phil Phlox generally appears human.

Star Trek: Mjolnir

Jason Mamoa as Callum MacLeod
David Borneaz as Damrus Rel
James Marsters as Shrak th'Chayn
Nikki Minaj as Navesh Tymoshenko
Orlando Bloom as Nerah Antos
Jack Black as Prolasch Gorsach
Rebecca Romijn as Vhela
Salma Hayek as Melina Pax
Jennifer Lopez as Reyna Vyn
and
Paul Wight as Gratakka
(As of Episode 2 which is currently being written)

Back in the 90s I imagined my character Captain Solaani Zaar looking pretty much like Danara Pel the Vidiian lady, including the forehead bumps and everything, so nowadays I just imagine Susan Diol the actress as having played her in 2001, but maybe she has slightly different forehead bumps.

Ya & Ne
Of course, Bynars are short. So that was an important aspect of their casting. The original actors cast in TNG to play them were women, but it has been difficult to find female actors online under 5 feet tall who don't have significant female traits that would be hard to cover with traditional Bynar costuming. I refocussed my search of male actors, and Dana Michael Woods seems perfect. His facial structure, I think, works ideally with the Bynar makeup.

A little Hollywood magic with the camera, and he could play both Ya and Ne, although, I would think the actors would have more fun with the roll if there were two of them to play off of each other.

I think he doesn't take himself too seriously, and that is what Ya & Ne are like. They are fish out of water, but always looking forward to their next experiences outside of the rigid Bynar world. They make a habit of wandering from the line every now and then.

Next is Damian Apollonias, the Greek/Turkish power systems engineer. The Greek actor, Thanasis Tsaltabasis (Θανάσης Τσαλταμπάσης) struck me as exactly the way I picture Damian. Damian is well educated in his Greek heritage, his accent is thick, straight from the Aegean. He may even quote Homer once in a while. The Vulcan philosophy appears to have a strong connection, for Damian, to his Aristotelian ideals. He admires the Vulcan people, but has let go of his pursuit to imitate them.

Vulcan
Let me start this next casting call with Vulcan. The Vulcan needs a strong and resonant voice. Usually female because that's her preferred identity. She won't have any distinct regional accent. Her words are enunciated fully and clearly with a broad range of volume and tone.

I'm taking this opportunity to highlight Vulcan because I am so impressed and captivated by the vocal qualities and professional performing skills of Xe Sands. Xe (pronounced Ex-ee) reads the podcast Bookburners and really makes the various characters and the action standout from each other. Her style is intimate but flexible. I think Xe Sands would be perfect for a self-aware spaceship that defined herself by her membership in the community of her crew.

Vulcan is always a machine, meaning she doesn't have the needs for environmental constancy and she is never unsure of what she knows. At the same time, Vulcan understands that her knowledge may be incomplete and even erroneous, but she is absolute in her recall and her connections of facts to synthesized conclusions. Vulcan's access to knowledge is as broad as the subspace accessible Federation Information Network, the Royal Romulan Empirical Data Matrix, and Occasional access into Klingon, Orion, and Epsilon-Hydra Civilizations, along with any other electronic data sources she may be near. Thus, the consequence of her circumstances allows her to maintain a Vulcan calm with the discipline of the tireless.

With her strong desire to contribute to her community and her awareness of her unique attributes as a powerful starship and advanced computer mind, Vulcan maintains a vigilant watch over her crew. She, unlike biological Vulcans, actually experiences emotions. Her caring for her crew extends to include real sympathy. And, despite Vulcan's identifying herself as Vulcan by origin, she chooses not to purge herself of her emotions, using them instead, as a tether to connect her with the non-Vulcan members of her crew, most especially to Sam.

Xe Sands is very similar to the voice I hear whenever I am writing Vulcan's dialog. If you haven't listened to Bookburners, I highly recommend it. But here is a little example of Xe Sands performing the reading of another audio book Buttered Side Down by Edna Ferber.
