Cast and director of Batman: Under the Red Hood revealed

I forgot all about Black Mask and was wondering who would be doing his voice. Black Mask has become one of my favorite new Batman villains in the last couple years.

Still not convinced by Greenwood as Batman. I like him as an actor, but Greenwood's Batman voice sounds enough like Conroy's here that it's hard to resist perceiving it as imitative. Maybe if he'd found another direction to take the voice in, it would work better. Or maybe I just need to hear more of his performance to get a better feel for it.

I'm still dying to hear John Di Maggio's take on the Joker.

Christopher I believe in the behind the scenes featurette (I found it on youtube) you can hear a couple of voice samples of DiMaggio's Joker laughter...not sure if there has been any actual dialogue from him. I personally am digging Bruce Greenwood's Batman voice...and Jensen Ackles as Jason Todd/Red Hood is great as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing the "Jonah Hex" short more than I was the feature film. Looking forward to seeing the "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" sneak peak feature as well.

I finally saw this last night (thanks Netflix streaming!). I really enjoyed it and found this storyline more satisfying than the comic book explanation for his resurrection. The storyline was cool and the voice acting was on point. Excellent stuff all around. :)

I just finished reading "Red Hood: Lost Days" and thought if they wanted to adapt it that it would work great as a prequel companion piece (which is what it is anyway).

Bump!

I impulse-bought a boxed set of 5 Batman animated movies last week in my local HMV for £17 and, having watched TDKR in the cinema on Thursday, I watched this and Year One on Friday night.

Of the two animated movies, to my surprise, I much preferred this one. I don't normally like 'retconning' stories, where a deceased hero is brought back to life. It's different when the likes of Superman or Batman appear to be dead and come back to life - you just know they won't stay dead. But the death of Jason Todd's Robin was quite a big deal and even though I wasn't a comics reader when he was killed off, I remember the controversy. I did read the story where he was killed and found it a powerful one.

That story was equally powerfully recreated at the start of this movie, with a graphic scene which earned this its 15 certificate (I've had to hide this boxed set from my kids!). And despite my reservations about the resurrection of Todd, I was quite gripped by the excellent story, artwork and voice acting. I thought Bruce Greenwood made an excellent Batman and he was ably supported by Jensen Ackles as Jason/ Red Hood, Neil Patrick Howser as Nightwing (and no, I didn't think of Dougie Howser at all) and John DiMaggio as an excellent Joker. I thought Greenwood and DiMaggio were at least as good as the sainted Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. Jason Isaacs was a little under-used as Ra's, I thought, but Wade Williams was good value for money as Black Mask. He now has a hat trick of Batman roles, having been a prison officer (nope, not Bellick) in ...Rises and will be Two-Face in the animated Dark Knight Returns (and I caught him on tv today in a repeat of ER...spooky!).

I know that many hold up Mask of the Phantasm as the animated Batman standard to attain (it was also in this boxed set) but I'd say that this is the best one I've seen.

I can't disagree. This and 'Wonder Woman' are my favorite of these DC animated flicks of the last few years.

Neil Patrick Howser as Nightwing (and no, I didn't think of Dougie Howser at all)

Evidently you did, because the actor's name is Neil Patrick Harris.

and John DiMaggio as an excellent Joker. I thought Greenwood and DiMaggio were at least as good as the sainted Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

I actually didn't find DiMaggio's Joker anywhere near as good as I would've expected from him. I think he could've been great as a more manic, flamboyant Joker, but instead they took it in a more Heath Ledgerish direction, and I didn't think that was the best use of his talents.

Jason Isaacs was a little under-used as Ra's, I thought, but Wade Williams was good value for money as Black Mask. I quite liked Williams in his bad-guy role in the Enterprise episode "Civilization," thinking he had a great voice with an Orson Welles quality. But I found him unimpressive as Black Mask -- or maybe it was just the character I found unimpressive because he was so broad and one-dimensional.

Yeah, Red Hood was great. I've been fighting the urge to buy the boxed set with this Year One, and Gotham Knight they have in the big Batman movie display at the Wal-Mart where I work. I've been equally tempted by the one with the two Superman/Batman movies which I also really like.
