Cartoons from the 80s

Was I the only one when TPM was showing who thought of the robot soldiers of Flash Gordon?

Cheers,

I think it was ABC that had Spider-Woman and Plastic Man. NBC had Fantastic Four with HERBIE, then there was another cartoon version of The Thing, which starred a teenager who put two rings together and said, "Thing Ring, do your thing," and this rocky hide materialized around him.

The manliest TV show EVER

This was probably my favorite from that era:

I was about 12 when I saw Star Blazers the first time, after living on navy bases my whole life and starting to develop my interest in naval aviation, so this one was a big hit with me.
Yep. Was in just starting High School when this hit the airwaves This was the series where I found out a lot of the cartoons I loved as a kid like Speed Racer (aka Mach A Go Go) were originally made and aired in Japan.

They did a remake of the original Space Battleship Yamato season 1 in 2012 and S2 with the Comet Empire storyline in 2014 (they did a good job with the English Dub too) and you can still stream it via Crunchyroll.

Still my favorite animated show - period. :)

The 80's were a wild time for cartoons. Just about every imaginable IP would be turned into cartoons for further merchandising. I know there was a Dukes of Hazzard cartoon, but I'm surprised there wasn't one for Knight Rider, or at least I'm not aware of one. That show seemed a perfect setup for a cartoon.

I've seen 2199 and the first half of the Comet Empire season. :techman:

I liked 2199, which was a good update of the Iscandar storyline; but I found 2202 a slog to get through. Especially the latter half of the season.
In the original, after the Battle at Saturn, it felt like we're barreling towards the end of the series, and with the Yamato the only ship left, the stakes were that much higher.
In 2202, they just keep throwing ships at the Comet Empire and the Yamato is absent for two episodes and it feels like they're padding out the story.
There were also some questionable character decisions made by the writers that didn't work for me as well.

Can't say I have any fondness for any of the 80's cartoons (too old) but I didn't like the 70's or 60's ones much either. I just don't like cartoons.

Jr., however, who wasn't even born then, is massively into Transformers and in particular G1 from the 1980's.

Moody music . Check
Atmosphere. Check
Suddenly changes to Japanese rock song. Unexpected

Wasn't too bad but not sure if I would have watched it as a kid or a teen.

Another show I adored as a small child.

There it is! I was waiting for someone to post that one (I didn't because my brain simply couldn't come up with the name). :D

I loved the Snorks! I use to have an action figure (one of the orange guys, I think) as a kid but I think it has been long since lost. :(

Haha, OMG. I think I had the exact same Snork - also long lost.

I googled and see Samurai Pizza Cats is one month off the 80s (premiered 1st Feb, 1990). However, another early favorite of mine made the cut:

"Denver, the last Dinosaur. He's MY friend and a whole lot more!"

Wait. A whole lot more?

Also, I loved Jem.

Finally - Voltron: Defender of the Universe. My younger brother used to copy the Green ... whatever they called themselves ... doing a handstand on top of his lion when they were suiting up. He would always jump up on the couch and do the handstand, until one day he fell back and shattered the living room window (he was fine)

So were there any toys made in the '80s that didn't get a cartoon?

Has anybody here seen the Never Ending Story cartoon? I've never seen but at a big fan of the first two movies and the book, I'm curious about it. From what I've read, it sounds like it brought in a few things from the book like Atreyu having green skin, and I think there were at least couple book characters who never showed up in the movies.

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

Wait. A whole lot more?
That was such a wonderfully dumb show and I couldn't stop watching it.

The 80s were a magical time. ;)

And the answer is no.
