Captain's Glory

I got a copy of Captain's Glory for Christmas from my Mother and am just getting around to reading it. I have not read any of the Shatner books listed on the inside cover so my question is this.......

How is Kirk alive?

I assume he did not croak on Veridian but was just curious how and why. I'd love some insight from my fellow Trek litters. Thanks in advance.

Kirk returned in the aptly-titled novel The Return, which explained how he was resurrected after dying on Veridian III.

After The Return, there were seven more books involving Kirk in the 24th century, of which Captain's Glory is the last.
