Well, M'Ress was from the 1970's. There's a big difference in grooming between then and now

I am pretty sure people could had taken it as endersment of bestiality if they were more like cats.

I can see not going total furry, but a few more feline attributes wouldn't have hurt. Things like the ears, the eyes, maybe some facial texturing ala a cat's whiskers, some finger nail appliances, maybe some patterns on the skin, like "tiger stripes" along the sides or down the back.
