Buffy season 8-- MAJOR SPOILERS-- Twilight reveal

Meltzer seems to have a handle on the character's voices...in fact if I was Joss and Brad had the time I'd make him the permanent writer for next year.

Still don't like how they've made Angel into a pithy fatalist. I mean, c'mon, he's pretty much admitted at this point that he's perfectly complacent in the destruction of the freaking world if he gets to screw Buffy and dance around in "We-Are-As- GOOOODS!"-land. "Connor's dead, Angel!" "Who cares, I'ma-gettin' LAID!"

Hopefully the latest arrival at the end of the season will call him on his shit.

btw is anyone still reading the Angel IDW lines? I've said before I thought their post-After Fall series 'Aftermath' was horrendously bad. Then they had a bunch of little stories about Gunn, Drusilla and Angel & Spike at Comic-con which were mildly entertaining stuff.
Now they've got Bill Willingham writing the ongoing series. I read the first two issues and wasn't impressed. He hasn't got a handle for the characters at all, the art is all taken from stock photos, and it was badly plotted and written. And the issues that have come since sound like pretty much the same from the reviews I've read.

I don't know why they continued the series. At this point I stick only to the stuff plotted/supervised by Joss.
$$$$$$. That is why.

Just read #35. Not bad, I still don't get what the frak's going on though, it's all getting a big bogged down in waffle. Hopefully the arrival of Spike will clear things up.
Liking the B cover to #36, a parody of the Twilight: New Moon poster-

Although it's not out till September!
There's the Serenity Wash one-shot out in June, nothing in July, the Riley one-shot in August, and finally back to Season 8 in September

Can someone explain to me wtf this whole Twilight-Angel-Buffy-sex-blankworld story is about? I read the comics and have no idea what any of it means, what's happening, Giles' exposition hour left me even more confused than before.

By breaking the Slayer cycle by activating all of them, Buffy somehow has caused her and Angel to become ascending beings and the "Adam and Eve" of the next world "Twilight". To mark the birth of the new world, hordes of demons and dimensional rifts are appearing to destroy the old one.

Sorry to dig this thread up from the grave, but I just wondered if people here are still reading Season 8 and what their thoughts are.
The penultimate issue just came out today (39 of 40) and it was a biggie. Haha, it's Joss Whedon and it's season finale time, so its not too much of a reveal to say that someone DIED! But I won't spoil it for now.

You know, I still buy the every month and its enjoyable enough (though I do think the story improves when I read it TPB form rather than the little monthly snippets we get) the story has become very convuluted I think. Its hard to keep track of what the hells going on half the time. Certain characters seem to just get forgotten about, plot elements aren't really explained etc. Things like The Seed of Wonder for example, now we actually saw this in the flashforward from #10, so I guess it was planned, but its does read as though it wasn't planned out as best as it could.
And just the general plot of Buffy and Angel having sex in space and shagging a new universe into existence is beyond the word 'ridiculous'

It'll be interesting to reread the whole thing once its done, and we'll have to wait what happens in the final issue next month. I just hope there aren't tonnes of things left unexplained that's like "oh well there's always Season 9." A decent wrap up better be completed

I have been waiting for the finale trade to be collected. I dug Brad Meltzer's "Twilight" arc for it's high concept ideas. Overall I would say that this season has been just as good as any of the highly regarded television series although it would cost an arm and leg to produce in real life lol. I believe that Joss has said that there will be a definitive ending for this season and then a hiatus and then season nine, but knowing Joss I think he will be tempted to leave a couple of plot's unresolved.

I'm kind of hoping next season starts the push towards the "Fray" future. I'm wondering if the creation of the Twilight dimension as I've taken to calling it is where Buffy and all the demons weren't sucked into during the Great Final Battle that is briefly shown in Fray.

Since Buffy and Angel are the Adam & Eve of the new world does it seem likely that season 9 would deal with a pregnancy? I'm not saying it's a great idea but that was Adam & Eve's job.

^ I thought you were waiting for the TPB? Have you read the other issus of this last arc?

I can't believe they killed on the core four. Although I suppose the G-Man had been marginalised anyway since Season 6. I guess that Ripper spin off definitely won't be happening now!
Nice clip to remember the guy

Well to be honest I have been reading my friends issues. I just read 39 last night and was blown away by the end. I guess next month is the finale to season nine. From the description of the issue synopsis it seems like we're not done yet either and a betrayal is revealed. I have no idea who it could be.

^ I think #39 was the big finale, as Scott Allie has said that #40 will essentially be an epilogue.
The whole 'betrayal' thing goes back to the vision Buffy saw in #10, which was of the last page of #39, "Betrayal, the closest, the most unexpected"

I've read around at the point is that destroying the Seed Buffy has in essence betrayed herself

That's right. I did see the next issue was called Coda. Knowing Joss though his Coda's aren't exactly eventless and normally have emotional impact. I like the idea that Seed Buffy has betrayed herself. She was in fetal position at the end of the issue and looked pretty bad when Xander approached her. I assume that Angel was purged of whatever was possessing him.

Yeah, with the Seed broken they'd lost their superpowers (although Buffy still has normal Slayer powers of course) and Angel was no longer posessed by Twilight.

There's a good interview Here on Youtube ,with editor Scott Allie about the issue (its divided into two parts)

Comicbookresources also has an interview with Georges Jeantry where he talks about this season and the arc and teases season nine. Overall I would have loved this season if it was filmed. It would have to be ostensibly stripped to film for a budget but easily the most epic of the show. What's the deal with Spike being referred to as 'Your Majesty'? Have I missed something?

Some people think that the Twilight arc in S8 is basically about Joss and his relationship with the universe he created. Which may be true - after all, Joss did say in a recent interview that he is Buffy (the character), or Buffy is him. But I can't agree that the Twilight universe is supposed to stand in for the Buffyverse... Because 1) Joss didn't really abandon Buffyverse, and 2) Buffyverse is not soulless, dull, unchanging and dead like the Twilight universe is.

Maybe it's more about the things that Joss's creation has spawned. Think about it... Soulless shell of a universe, with lots of overblown, ridiculous 'romantic' elements that feel like a distorted, parodied version of early seasons Bangel... Remind you of anything? ;)

How so? It was exactly what she needed to do to save the world.

I don't think the "betrayal" ever referred to Buffy being betrayed. We just all assumed so at first. But think of when and to whom those words were said. It happened two times. The first time it was Robin (the "Minder" lady that Buffy and Willow went to see in the issue 'Anywhere But Here") talking to Buffy and Willow. Buffy asked "What happens to me here?" and Robin said "Betrayal. The closest, most unexpected". Everyone assumed that it was Buffy who was to be betrayed, but Robin never specified that. The second time, it was Saga Vasuki (the snake lady, Willow's mentor/lover) talking to Willow. Willow was the only one present both times. Saga Vasuki used the exact same words: "Betrayal. The closest, the most unexpected", and when Willow asked "who?", she looked very sad. Saga Vasuki didn't know Buffy and she meant nothing to her, why would she be sad about someone betraying Buffy? Unless she's telling Willow that her best friends will "betray" her (from her and Willow's point of view, anyway).

Willow is the one who was desperate to protect the Seed, and Willow is the one who lost the most when the Seed was broken. I think that the "betrayal" is Willow being "betrayed" - from her point of view - by Buffy (and indirectly Xander), who have deprived her of magic. It will be interesting to see how Willow copes with this, and what her relationship with her best friends will be like from now on. She has gotten very disconnected from humanity - and this was very obvious in this issue. When Kennedy ran up to her concerned, she ignored her and kept calling for Saga Vasuki.

Those giant bugs from his ship consider him their king or something...

How the hell he came into the possession of the ship and got the bugs to serve him, don't ask, I have no idea.

edit: Just read the interview with Scott Allie, and he confirms that Joss's theme for the season was "Buffy betrays herself". Because ending magic is apparently 'a betrayal' of what Buffy is. OK then. But really, I don't see how breaking the Seed in that particular instance was a betrayal of anything, with everything that was at stake, except from the POV of someone who is completely obsessed with magic and can't live without it... Which isn't Buffy. Willow, yes. Buffy, no.

The current IDW 'Spike' series is apparantly going to deal with this. The series was supposed to be an ongoing run, but now the licence is soon to change hands back to Dark Horse it's only gonna be 8 issues long (2 have come out so far)

It'll be a nice tie in, but still... that kinda sums up a lot of my feelings of Season 8. So much is left unexplained and just "wtf." Like why did the Scooby Gang even end up in Scotland with a big castle anyway? Scott Allie and co have been asked this before and always mention they didn't wanna spend loads of time explaining every little thing that happened since 'Chosen', which is fair enough I suppose, but still.

Also Angel, I still have no idea what his deal and how he really got involved in this whole Twilight thing and why he did it, and how he got the whole US military involved, and found Amy & Warren, etc. Again, I think IDW are gonna touch on a little with their remaining arc before the license ends, but apparantly they'll only slightly cover it. The general plot of Season 8 still doesn't really make any sense to me.
