Books with lousy endings

Back when John Grisham was really pretty new and hot, I remember reading The Firm and The Pelican Brief and really thinking they were good. But then when I read The Client, I was hugely disappointed. I was expecting a plot twist of some kind - there were tons of them in The Firm and that's what made it such a great book.

But sadly, none ever came in The Client.

I can't remember ever being that disappointed in a novel.

Ooo, ooo! I know this one. I had a library book called Descent, can't remember the author's name. Did some very creative stuff with Neanderthals survivng below the ground and becoming a threat to H. Sapiens in the modern day. Mental transference, tunnels under the ocean, and a shit scary opening sequence. Then, about 2/3 through, the wheels fell off. Stuff that was set up early in the story, which seemed so obvious it miust be a red herring, was actually the main game, and the concealed villain, when revealed, just weakened the story and end SO much. Seriously disappointed.

The author is Jeff Long. I actually found the sequel, Deeper, to be much better even though it's extremely depressing.

Throwaway lines like killing off Tonks and Lupin, when they were central characters?

Tonks and Lupin were never central characters, just supporting characters. I think some fans over inflated their importance because they liked them.

Martin Cruz Smith's Gorky Park has a horrible crappy drawn out kill-me-now last SIX chapters. I saw the movie before I read the book. The film does a much better ending. They should rip out the last chapters of the book and put a DVD of the movie in a pocket on the back cover. Read until here, then watch the movie ending!

Ringworld.

It's a great book with a shit ending. It just ends. I can't believe Niven didn't originally plan for a sequel, because it was begging for one. And the fans did beg, and so he wrote more.

Aahhh, didn't know there was one! Thanks. Mind you, don't know if I'll read it. I mean, the first one started so well, then just fizzled. Sounds like it might be a worthy read, but I do like a happy ending.

The stone Angel by Margaret Lawrence.

All that BS and I didn't even get the ending i wanted.

Stephen Baxter's Titan has a pretty weak ending, tho the entire book is pretty depressing really.
