Black Widow anticipation thread

Wonderful interview.

A fucking shame it didn't happen a hell of a lot sooner. Looking at you, Ike.

As it is, sounds like the film will be a great coda for Nat.

I'll be pretty damn surprised if it does get its May release. Although, shifting this could turn into a whole juggling act altogether, since not only does scheduling with other blockbusters come into play, it could have a domino effect of bumping other MCU movies to later dates.

A lot of films are being delayed and Disneyland has been shuttered, so this delay seems inevitable and it sucks. Bah.

^ Not being funny but do you seriously think that in any way would happen?

What an absolute disservice to the movie and to Scarlett Johansson that would be. Marvel's second only female lead superhero movie, a core character we've been watching onscreen for 10 years now, a character fans have been campaigning should have her own movie for years. Finally it happens and it merely gets shoved on a streaming service, where all those millions it will make in movie profits are just lost? Yeah maybe it would get a few new subscribers, but come on it's not gonna happen. It will get delayed though I'm sure, but they're not going to instantly toss it aside.

Sorry, but IMO it's just kind of a ludicrous suggestion.

While it would absolutely deserve a cinematic run, the movie is completed, while other streaming projects aren't and they might need new content to run on them.

Just hope this particular movie isn't delayed by that much like Bond of FF9.
Wouldn't mind paying standalone for it, then watching at home either.

They'll probably just shift every movie up by one slot, so it'll take the place of "The Eternals". Especially since production on Shang-Chi has now shut down.

Disney has its streaming service--maybe straight to Disney+ is the way to go?
As this movie likely (or let's be honest, it does) have a significantly higher budget than any movie made directly for streaming/home media, doing so and not bothering with a theatrical release, how the hell would it ever hope to make back the money it spent on production? I guarantee everyone involved is going to look at postponing the release as a preferable option to going straight to Disney+, even if postponing Black Widow also postpones all other MCU movies.

I agree completely that it would be a disservice, and I don't really think it would happen--but I do think something like this could happen going forward. Imagine Disney releasing a movie on their service--even one that needs to be rented--it would be a phenomenal disruption of how we currently think of movies.

I agree with you completely.
With that said, it's not like a movie premiering on a streaming site, even a big budget blockbuster, is the most ludicrous thing ever suggested.

It's happening already and will absolutely do so in the future.

If this thing goes on long enough (which I hope and expect it won't), I could definitely see some studios making deals with pay-per-view streaming services like the one my local theater runs. But I would not expect any major title to get shunted directly to a subscription service like Disney+. Yeah, it might help subscriptions but it was going to help subscriptions eventually anyway. They want some kind of ticket revenue first and if they're not going to get it from physical theaters then maybe from third party streaming sites would be good enough.

That is assuming this goes on long enough that further delay would actually be costing enough money to really scare them. And also assuming they don't face a massive shitfit from physical theaters (which would make sense, since they often complained so much about how they need exclusivity in the first x months of release and also because if this model took off it would pretty much be the beginning of the end for physical theaters).

Eh, there are already movies that are made for streaming services, and indeed made for home media movies can date all the way back to the days of VHS, to say nothing of telemovies. This has hardly been a disruption to "how we think of movies."

It is for movies that are traditionally considered to be blockbusters.

Since those movies always have multi-millions for their budget, I doubt we'll ever see them go directly to home media, simply because there'd be no way for them to make back their production costs that way.

Not necessarily. If I had the option of seeing Black Widow at home for the price of two movie tickets, I would rent it. I rent movies now when they make to pay-streaming just l used to rent movie from Blockbuster. I would definitely rent Black Widow for premium price. It could be a real strategy because a theatrical release could still be done later.

Michael Bay's Ryan Reynolds blockbuster was streaming only on Netflix.
