Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's wedding

'The whole thing makes me feel badly, poor man. There is such a sickness there. It's so patently obvious that there is a psychosis there. I don't know what his original thing about me was. I have no idea.
'I didn't read his book that was printed many years ago, but apparently I didn't let somebody have a close-up. I literally don't know him.
'I didn't know him very well on the series. He would come in for a day or two, as evidenced by the part he played. Then on the movies, there occasionally. I didn't know the man.
'But he has continued to speak badly about me for all these years. Obviously, hiding his homosexuality - talk about festering and not living the truth of your life and feeling badly about yourself - and being fearful somebody would find out about this terrible, terrible secret, so he thought.
'Finally at the age of, I think, 70, he decides to come out of the closet and say, "I'm gay."
'Like, who cares? Be gay. Don't be gay. That's up to you George.'...
'You would think he had this epiphany and say - because he and I don't have many years left in this world - "I wish him well. I'm so happy that I wish him well."
'But instead what he does is he makes this big deal about not inviting me to his wedding.
'If I was such a terrible force in his life - even some 40-odd years later, because I've not seen him - that I effect his marriage where he has to isolate it, what kind of sickness is going on in the man?
Why would he go out of his way to denegrate me? It's sad that the man can't find enough peace in his life to either say "Be positive" and say "I forgive him, whatever those hurts were", or to shut up about it.
'It's sad. I feel nothing but pity for him.'

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

William Shatner, miffed about not being cast as Captain Kirk in the forthcoming Star Trek movie scheduled to be released next May, has responded to fellow cast member George Takei's public criticism of him and his publicly announced decision not to invite Shatner to his marriage to his longtime partner last month. Takei has said in interviews that Shatner displayed a massive ego on the set of the original Star Trek series to the point of pressuring directors to show close-ups of him while other characters were speaking. In an interview posted on his website, Shatner says that he rarely saw Takei during Star Trek productions. "I literally don't know him," he said. "He'd come in for a day or two as evidenced by the part he played. ... But he has continued to speak badly about me for all these years. ... I presume he can remember all of these terrible things I must have done when I said hello or something to him. ... Why would he go out of his way to denigrate me? And it's sad that the man can't find enough peace in his life to be positive and say, 'I forgive him for whatever those hurts were' -- or to shut up about it. As I said, I feel nothing but pity for him."

I'm with Shatner on this one...

And even if he DID act like an asshole on the set? Well, so what? Egotistical stars are PART of the business. Jack Lord was, according to those on the set of Hawaii Five 0, a real prick..but again, who cares? Its their name on the top of that cast, and if they throw their weight around, who cares? Harrison Ford is known to be a prick on the set, so is, surprisingly, Robin Williams. I have no sympathy for George, nor Nichelle, or Walter or Jimmy. They were not the stars of the show...William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, and Deforrest to some degree were.

Its showbiz folks...thats all you have to know..

And even if he DID act like an asshole on the set? Well, so what?

It would make him an asshole, that's so what.

There's nothing in the job requirements for "TV star" that call for bad behavior toward one's coworkers, and most actors don't indulge it. It reflects poorly on someone's character if they do.

That's "so what?"

Having said all that - It's probably about time that Shatner had his poke back at George Takei (this isn't really the first time, but it may be the first on video). Takei has been badmouthing Shatner as a person, in print and in front of microphones, for years now...and that frankly makes him something of an asshole himself. Shatner has shown a lot of forebearance, and Takei's overdue for a slap-down.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Shrug. Shatner pulled the numbers and has been successful in what; three series and more than twenty films, as well as more stage plays than I can remember?

Takei coat-tailed or to use the proper auto-racing metaphor, drafted in Shatner's wake. I would just shut up, and soldier. The guy out front drawing all the fire, is the one who helps me pay my bills. No Kirk, no Sulu, no residuals.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

I remember a radio interview on Key 103 in Manchester (England) around about 1987/1988.

Shatner and Takei were opening a ride at Alton Towers.

Shatner had been announced as the director of ST: V and Takei was so full of praise for Bill as an actor and director that you'd have thought they were best friends!!

But then again Takei is probably still expecting a call from Paramount telling him that Captain Sulu: The Series is going ahead!!!

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Forgive and forget...

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

I've met both more than once.
Shatner was very unpleasant, even to those paying him for his appearances. I have seen him be rude to others when it was NOT necessary.
George was just the opposite. Kind to fans and kind to those who brought him to conventions. He introduced me to people who helped in my bid for a new Trek television series and gave me much needed encouragement (as did Jimmy Doohan).
Although I didn't like it due to the language, George even showed up for Shatner's roast on Comedy Central.
I don't really care about the interviews. I believe actions speak louder than words and Shatner's actions over the years show me he is still an unpleasant person.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Shatner's got a point, but it wasn't one that needed to be made publicly. Takei has been pissing on Shatner for years and years... it's time for George to get over the offenses of his youth. At the same time, Bill is clearly a blowhard and egomaniac. Eventually, one of them is going to have to be the bigger man and simply shut up about the other. Shatner's response to not being invited to Takei's wedding should have been to just shut his pie hole and not go.

Yeah. What doesn't get pointed out much is that the number of co-stars who have had unpleasant experiences with Shatner is legion. OTOH, there are folks he's worked with who like him quite a lot. Unless there's a conspiracy of a whole lot of folks who don't necessarily know one another, stretching back four decades, the Shat is a really difficult and self-centered character. Sometimes.

Notably, however, Takei is the only one of the anti-Shatner crowd who thinks it appropriate to go on at length about it in public with some regularity. That doesn't speak well for him.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Wow. How immature to spout off in public like this. Whoever gets the idea first to stop doing so will be the bigger man.

If Takei thought Shatner did not belong at his wedding, that's his prerogative in my opinion. But I don't want to be hearing about the drama from either side.

I agree completely. This has been going back and forth for months between the two of them. It's getting tiresome.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Evidently, Shat could be an ass. No doubt. I'm sure some have legitimate beefs.

However, that was what, 40 odd years ago? It's time to get over it. Shatner will be Shatner and there is nothing that will change. To keep attacking is just irrational. Best to just let it go.

Both look foolish by continuing. And it's a shame. I liked the work of both. I hate to see them do this. It changes nothing.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

I hope Bill and George get things straightened out in the next couple of years. God knows how long the original TOS crew are going to still be on the Earth and I'd hate for that to be the thing that goes to the grave.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

seriously people still care what shatner says? this feud, that feud, then the more recent "i want to be the star of the new trek movie" bonanza. any statement from him makes me just sigh and

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

I'm with Shatner on this one. Regardless of what happened on the set, the series was 40+ years ago and the last movie to feature them was 17 years ago. It's time for George Takei to move on. Neither is getting any younger and there's no reason Takei needs to continue to be on the attack. Even James Doohan, who hated Shatner's guts for a good long time, finally made peace with him prior to his death. It's time to be men about this...

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Regardless of whether Shatner has a point (which I honestly don't think he does with regard to the wedding because in my opinion a person has EVERY right to decide on the guest list, to hell with anybody else's concerns), he crossed the line when he had to air his grievance in public. Same with any other cast member or any other public figure that feels the need to use their status to air their dirty laundry.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

I totally don't care if these two hate each other till the day they die any more than I care if the janitor in my building hates the guy who patrols the parking garage.

The only thing I'll say is that a wedding is supposed to be this super happy day of celebration for the couple and the people that are important to them. No one should be obligated to invite people they're not comfortable with or happy with, especially if they aren't actually friends.

Too bad these guys have such bad blood between them - I like both of them immensely. Its a shame Shatner couldn't have been the first to reach out and bury the hatchet this time.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Both of them need to drop it and get over themselves. Takai nursing a grudge (or whatever one wants to call it) for over 40 years is pathetic, but like anyone else he's entitled to invite whoever he likes to his own wedding. Shatner publicly trashing him and his choices is just as bad, if not worse - the circumstances of Takai's "coming out" are no one's business but his and his partner's.

They both need to shut the hell up and get on with their lives.

Re: Bill Shatner's response to being uninvited to George Takei's weddi

Response from Takei's spokespeople:
STATEMENT FROM GEORGE TAKEI REGARDING COMMENTS MADE BY WILLIAM SHATNER:
"It is unfortunate that Bill was unable to join us for our wedding as he
indeed was invited to attend. It is our hope that at this point he joins
us
in voting NO on Proposition 8, which seeks to eliminate the fundamental
right for same-sex couples to marry in California." -- George Takei

Background:
In case you are planning to cover, or have already covered, the new
video by
William Shatner where he discusses not being invited to the recent
Takei-Altman wedding, please note that Mr. Shatner was invited to the
wedding (through his manager Larry Thompson) when invitations were
mailed
out in July.
In June, when George Takei and Brad Altman received their license to
marry,
there was media speculation that Mr. Shatner would not be invited to the
wedding, yet invitations had not been sent out at that time.
On July 21, after the invitations had been mailed, Mr. Takei and Mr.
Altman
were interviewed on TV Guide Channel's "Watercooler" program and Mr.
Takei
first broke the 'exclusive' news: "Most of the invitations have been
sent
out, and Bill is amongst them".

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wlBVRBFQ3k>
Mr. Takei would go on to do other interviews before the Sept. 14
wedding,
such as an Associated Press radio interview that was also distributed as
a
print story (Sept. 12) where it is confirmed that Shatner was invited
but
had not RSVPd.
