I'm thinking Bill and Sookie are the Nate and Brenda of True Blood without the tragic ending. They'll break up this season because it needs to happen. Before the events of Season 3, Bill has been keeping secrets from Sookie telling himself that it's for her own good while continue to struggle with his vampire nature and having difficulty letting go of the past that still haunts him. Also Sookie was having her doubts about being in a relationship with a vampire while being completely blind to her true nature and seems in need for some personal growth which can't achieved with Bill being so protective of her. Breaking up would allow them to grow on their own like it did for Nate and Brenda after they break up by the end of SFU Season Two. The break-up between Bill and Sookie will probably last for a season or two. Bill may have a female love interest or two while Sookie hooks up with Eric, Alcide, and Quinn at certain points in the series. Sookie will learn something different from each of them. In the end, I think Bill and Sookie will get back together and become a stronger couple as a result. They won't be without their issues with Alan Ball being Alan Ball but I think the issues they'll face will be less of the old and more of the new.
This is all based on my belief that True Blood will have a diferent ending than the Southern Vampire Mysteries series because of Alan Ball being in charge and the show's history of making certain alterations to some storylines from the book series such as Lafayette being alive instead of dead and Godric being Eric's maker instead of a vampire named Appius Livius.
