BEYOND'S Soundtrack

I figured since it was released today (got my copy via Amazon!) and it played, at least for me, a large part of the experience, it deserved it's own discussion.

I have to say, this is definitely my favorite score of the three reboots, with Into Darkness' being second (and the only quality of that film that I really, really like) and a close second to the TWOK score in my personal rankings.

The first two tracks are by far the best and I've had them on repeat through Spotify for the last few days. I'll admit that the rest of the tracks are a bit hit or miss but man...those first three have pretty much depleted my supply of goosebumps for the week.

Now that I have the CD I plan to crank it up on a better sound system than that on my work computer or my car stereo and possibly do a more in depth review.

Did anyone else pre-order their copy and receive it today?

I got it digitally opening day. The Yorktown theme is lovely, and I also want to especially call out the "pensive" version of the main theme from Kirk's opening log entry. I'm a little divided on the beginning of the movie quoting only the first two notes of the four note motif that opens the TOS theme (I assume that's the legal maximum before they have to pay the Courage estate more money). It feels like a bit of a tease.

Actually, I've noticed that the new movies have generally been more restrained with it than I'd expect. '09 broke it out for Kirk, Spock, and Pike being rescued by the Enterprise, but other than that, it's been reserved for the very end of the movie (and, for this one and STID, largely omitted from the partial soundtrack release). The classic movies were able to punctuate key moments by using the original theme more freely.

But I digress. The Giacchino theme got some interesting variations, especially in "Motorcycles of Relief" and "Hitting the Saucer a Little Hard." I think the chorus in "Saucer" is singing lyrics, though I can't make them out.

I'd rate this as far ahead of the STID score, and neck-and-neck with '09's.

There are a few pieces that have a Jerry Goldsmith sound to it with a hint of John Williams...but Giacchino manages to still tell a story with his music (like John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith).

There are always some stand out tracks in the JJ Trek films.

ST 2009 - "Labour of Love" as Kirk is born, and "Nero Death Experience" as well as the new Trek main theme...

STID 2013 - The pensive Khan melody and tense theme from "London Calling" & "Brigadoom"

BEY 2016 - The beautiful waltz like "Night on the Yorktown", The mournful "Hitting the Saucer a Little Hard" and the new thoughtful variations of the main theme which seem to sum the mood of Kirk and the crew having spent so much time in space.

I'm tempted to get it, but I'm wondering whether they'll double-dip for this one as they did for the last two, and in that case I could afford to wait.

The music didn't stand out for me, but I only saw the film once, and I frequently need at least two viewings to really note the soundtrack.

For what it's worth, I liked the soundtrack more after listening to it in isolation and then in another viewing of the movie.

I think i am the same, you see the movie, then listen to the soundtrack after, and gain a new appreciation.

At least in my case, I listen to these soundtracks much more often than I watch the films, so they live with me longer.

It's Giacchino's best Trek score by far. Night on the Yorktown is my favorite track. It's so heavenly. It reminds me of the Enterprise reveal scene from TMP.

I downloaded it from iTunes today. The first 3 and last 2 tracks are very nice. Mocking Jayla reminded me of TOS fight scene music. I was disappointed I didn't hear the music they play when you see the Franklin flying away from the planet in Crash Decisions.

This is a very good soundtrack though I prefer the Into Darkness over this one. I hope they do another deluxe edition. With Giachinno's Star Trek soundtracks I don't mind double dipping.
