Best season of TNG?

I personally love season three the best. So many great episodes (Yesterday's Enterprise, The Offspring, Best of Both Worlds, etc). It's when the show came into its own.

What do others think?

Re: Best season of TNG?

My favorite is season four. The most consistently entertaining season of TNG and in my top three of all Trek.

It started off with the classic "The Best of BOth Worlds II". You have Family, Brothers. Highly entertaining sci fi mystery shows that no other Trek did like TNG-Remember Me, Future Imperfect, Clues, Night Terrors, Identity Crisis, The Nth Degree.

YOu've got thoughtful reflective pieces centering on our crew-The Wounded, Legacy, Final Mission, The HOst, Half a Life, Reunion, The Loss. The Mind's Eye was a thrill ride for viewers watching Geordi as a ticking time bomb. Qpid was a fun fluff piece. And while Redemption wasn't a BoBW cliffhanger it was solid enough with one of my favorite final shots of Sela stepping out of the shadows.

But seasons three and five are good too with episodes like Ensigns of Command, The Survivors, The Bonding, The Enemy, The Defector, Tin Man, The Offspring, Sarek, The Best of BOth Worlds, Ensign Ro, Silicon Avatar, Disaster, The Game, Hero Worship, Violations, Unification, Conundru, Power Play, Ethics, The First Duty, Cause and Effect, I Borg, The Next Phase, The Inner Light, TImes Arrow I.

Season six was hit or miss I thought. TImes Arrow II was mediocre, Realm of Fear was so-so, Man of the People was fun, Relics was outstanding, Schisms was patented Brannon Braga goodness, True Q was a bore, Rascals was fun, Chain of Command was great intense stuff, Ship in a Bottle was great, Face of the Enemy great, The Chase was a meaningful and cool episode, Timescape another fanastic Braga script, Descent was good.

Season seven really showed the series was out of steam.

Re: Best season of TNG?

I like the four the best--most of my all-time favorites are from this season, and it has the fewest clunkers.

Here's how I'd rank them:

1. 4
2. 5
3. 3
4. 2
5. 6
6. 1
7. 7

Re: Best season of TNG?

Season Three is definitely a great season with a consistency throughout the entire 24 episodes; however, I voted for season two because of its tone which I felt was decidedly darker than the rest of the series. It was also the season where space exploration felt dangerous and not always safe. It was also the season in which it felt like the Enterprise was truly out on the edges of the frontier, all alone. Not to mention that I liked Pulaski and her relationships with Picard, Data and Worf. She added a little fire to the cast, something which Beverly never did.

Re: Best season of TNG?

I went with Season Four. I'd probably rank the rest as 3, 6, 5, 2, 7, 1.

Re: Best season of TNG?

Season 5 to me represents when everyone had finally settled into a comfortable groove, knew their roles and the stories were fun and entertaining.

5, 7, 6, 3, 4, 2, 1.

Re: Best season of TNG?

I voted for season five, but I really think TNG was very consistent during season 3-6. But, then again, I like Masks, Phantasms, and Genesis, so what do I know? :p

Re: Best season of TNG?

Season six. It's just very strong overall I feel. Highlights include Braga's best script - 'Frame of Mind' and the best two-parter of the series - 'Chain of Command.'

That Masaka is waiting.

I'm midway into S3 on a marathon. Late S2 into S3 has been strong, though interspersed with some truly dreadful soap opera episodes ("The Icarus Factor, "The Price" in all its thong up the ass, cameltoe splendor).
I did notice last night that "The Defector" was the first episode to be literally ironed out - at the beginning of S3 the new uniforms all have a crease down the center which is smoothed out mid-season.

I found Masks to be crap--interesting idea horribly executed--but I loved Brannon Braga on TNG and I liked or loved Phantasms and Genesis.

Re: Best season of TNG?

Have to rank 4 as the best (in terms of overall quality), followed by 3 & 5.

Re: Best season of TNG?

It's a tough call between the third and fourth seasons for me. Today the third season gets my vote.

Re: Best season of TNG?

season 5 for me. good episodes the cast are relaxed and comfortable with their roles. good storytelling and stories that started to expand the trek universe.

Yep, the unis changed in their texture too, from more velvet looking to the style they had the rest of the season. "The Defector" was also the first ep. to feature the 4 ft. E-D model.

As for the question, I'd go with S 3 overall. The production value noticeably went up, style wise, and the eps for the most part were all great.

I agree about what someone said about S2 though...some eps were goofy, but it's definitely underrated.

Re: Best season of TNG?

I think it's hardly surprising that seasons 3,4 & 5 are getting the most votes. They were really the best.

Re: Best season of TNG?

I'll say season 5 for now. I've not seen TNG for years now so all the seasons blend together a lot so it's hard to distinguish between them.

Per Robert Blackman, the 3rd season uniforms went through various forms before becoming the ones we now know. The first variation, seen in the first five episodes, had a seem that ran symetrically down both sides of the front and was a tunic with a regular hem and zipper in the back. The black shoulder area is also one solid piece. Both the male and female versions were a two-piece.

Because this version tended to ride up a lot and not stay in place, ruining the silouette of the uniform (TPTB wanted to keep a similar line to the original one-piece from a distance). Blackman made the tunic into a more Eishenhower-like jacket with a spandex belt at the bottom of the tunic and adjusting the cut, eliminating the two front seams and breaking up the shoulder black piece (the end points were now part of the sleeve piece). Picard is the first one who wears this version in "Booby Trap."

Beverly gets a one-piece in "Who Watches The Watchers" because the one-piece Blackman felt suited the women more and he cut the spandex differently (diagonal, iirc) than the first-season uniforms. The blue color was a problem and he constantly changed it from a darker blue to the eventual teal used in the rest of the series and DS9 & VOY.

The Captain's Jacket in season 5 was added at Stewart's insitance to stand-out from the rest of the cast, to showcase that he was the captain in a similar way to Kirk's wraparound.
