Belly Button Rings, what's the purpose?

Ok, I admit, I am not a girl, and I am not a teenager, but I would like to know the appeal of the Belly Button Ring.

You see, my 16 year old sister, who just turned 16 today, is going to get her Belly Button pierced and get a Belly Button Ring thing put on there.

I told her she doesn't need things like that to look pretty, she's very pretty just the way she is, and she said: "I'm not getting it to look pretty"

So, what is the purpose? Why do teenagers feel they must/or want to get, this thing?

Not sure, other than it screams, "I'm cool, I can mutilate my body in a fairly harmless way, I can be mildly rebellious, I'm not conservative." Of course I could be totally wrong.

What's the purpose of every jewelery? Necklaces, bracelets, and especially earrings, many of whom require to get your earlobes pierced?

If can you figure out that, you will have your answer about belly button rings.

Why do young people follow any fad? "Because everyone's doing it" or "because all my friends are doing it." The irony, of course, is that when EVERYBODY does something to be cool, it's no longer cool. They're all conforming to their non-conformity.

As for body piercings, if you're legally old enough, hell, it's your body and you can do what you want with it. I've just never understood why anyone would think they need more holes in their body than the ones they were born with.

Belly button rings don't annoy me but nose piercings do. I think they are ugly.

I remember hearing a conversation on the bus that went something like this

Girl 1 (in her late teen, maybe early 20s) - I wish I could find a job but employers won't even look at me once they see my nose piercing.

Girl 2 ( about the same age) - Why don't you just take the stud out of your nose.

Girl 1 - I shouldn't have to, I have a right to express myself.

Girl 2 - and employers have a right not to hire you.

Pretty much this.

Belly button rings serve the same purpose that all jewelry serves.

Thanks for the insight

I told my sister, well at least it isn't one of the ones that people will see

I still don't see the need for it though

I'm gonna ask her tonight what it means to her, I just want to understand why she feels she needs it

Does she have her ears pierced? If so, do you see the need for that? Belly button rings are no different.

^^^ ewwwwwwww! (to the ipod shuffle thought)

I don't really care for them myself. I'm not sure if it's the old fart in me or what.

I've got 3 piercings in my left ear, only 1 in my right. I HAD 4 in the left but it kept getting infected so i let it close up. The husband use to rag on my like crazy about the 3/4 in the left. RAG ON ME LIKE CRAZY!

I guess to each his own. But i still don't care for the belly button ones. Or even the nose ones. Or eyebrow piercings. I am not sure if i see them as mutilation or not. And yet, the husband probably thought the same thing about mine (which btw, i did looong before everybody was doing it.)

So again, i guess it's all to each his own. Am i really an old fart? :(

BRENT, i like what you told your sister. That she was pretty and didn't need it. That's awfully sweet!

She got that double piercing thing on her ear, you know where you can get like one little piece of jewelry at the top of your lobe in combination with the bottom being pierced? I saw no need for that either lol

The little stud nose rings don't bother me. My the ones that are actual rings and come out of your nostril do. They just look odd, and I feel like it would be uncomfortable.

Same with lip rings. Doesn't the clasp grate against your teeth and gums?

There is no need. There is only want. :vulcan:

I try, I'm a good deal older than her though, 14 years older to be exact, so I got a bit more experience with the life stuff, but yeah, I've never been a girl so maybe I'm missing something hehe

^ What a wonderful big brother. That's awesome!

OK, wtf is up with the tongue piercings? I get the whole sexual thing, but OMG that has to hurt like a motherfucker. Why would anyone subject themselves to that unless they LIKED pain? I know LOTs of people that did them and they weren't mascochists. I really really don't get that one at all.

From what I've heard, the pain really isn't that bad. The healing process, however, can be really annoying.

But I mean, people get tattoos all the time. Those can hurt like a bitch, and the process takes a lot longer than it does to get your tongue pierced.

I don't know....anytime i've bitten my tongue the pain was pretty damn horrible.
Just thought of tongue piercing seriously gives me the heebie jeebies.
