Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

Batwoman is Batwoman. The character has been around since the 1950s.

Not really. The modern Batwoman, Kate Kane, is only very loosely based on the Kathy Kane Batwoman who debuted in 1956. Kathy Kane was an heiress who became a crimefighter in hopes of winning the love of Batman. Kate Kane is Bruce Wayne's military-trained lesbian cousin who became a crimefighter to actually fight crime, and who has little use for Batman.

It was a modern day revision. Well I guess I was spoiled on the new show from this thread. Oh well I won't get to the show for a long time.lol

I dunno, "irony" seems to imply it was an unexpected happenstance. It may well have been done quite intentionally, as a "take that" to the homophobes of the past.

That or the character was so forgotten decades later that they figured it was the perfect opportunity to revive the character as a lesbian cousin.

Reminds me of the story that someone working on "Genesis II" was mad that network censors wouldn't let him show "I Dream of Jeanie" 's belly button in the 1960's, so he gave Mariette Hartley 2 of them in the 1970's TV movie.

No, that was a Gene Roddenberry production, and it was about not being allowed to show navels in Star Trek. It had nothing to do with I Dream of Jeannie, aside from the fact that they were both subject to the general '60s TV ban on female navels.

Tried the second episode. Too angsty for my tastes, and the acting just isn’t there. I’m done with it, but my wife is going to continue watching.

Batwoman
Season 1 - Episode 5 - "Mine Is a Long and a Sad Tale"

Kane/BW: "...before its too late." Its already too late. The biggest problem with this series is Kate's undying attempts to relate to/reclaim a relationship with her sister. No matter what Beth/Alice had to endure in her past, it does not excuse becoming a murderer (among other things, like defiling corpses), as she's a competent adult making clear, organized decisions about her life and her every criminal act. Kate being so emotionally/ethically compromised would be an interesting angle to explore as her misguided kid-gloves approach to Alice should cost Kate something on a personal level.

I do like the fact that her confidence in apprehending Alice was repaid with Alice simply being too smart for her by drugging her. She's still a newbie, and even if she was a bit more seasoned, her emotions are making her completely reckless.

Luke Fox: Easy to feel his irritation with Mary, but I almost felt the dread of another kind of relationship--if not now, then somewhere toward the end of the season.

Alice: So she was kidnapped by "Mouse's" father, subjected to his house of torture and butchery, but I was immediately reaching the conclusion that "Mouse" not only lived on, but is not a victim, but a victimizer. She considers him to be her "real" family, and after she's stabbed Jacob, she--and everyone else--should see it that way too, but Kate still thinks a murderer is worth saving. Egad.

Jacob: Smart to make the tracking of Alice as two-person operation, but I'm not certain it was wise to infodump the Alice-might-be-Beth tale to Sophie at this point. Much is made of Kate's feeling of loss about her sister (in childhood), but the agony a father feels for a lost or abducted child is almost beyond comprehension, as I've known two sets of parents who really dealt with that, and there's few horrors to match that.

Catherine Kane: Coming clean at all still does not ring as an entirely honest act. There has to be more to her past and present service to Alice.

Mary: No matter how much she's worked into the plot, she's a mess of a character walking the border of poor comic relief and flat out annoying.

NOTES: Okay, this isn't Luke Skywalker and Vader--there's no way young Kate could "sense" Beth in another location, whether that's a room, or anywhere else.

Kate still trying to dig up that old connection with Sophie with the finger "shush" against Sophie's lips. No respect for Sophie's marriage.

GRADE: B+.

Several thoughts/observations on tonight's episode:
1) I like that Jacob finally can't deny that Alice is Beth; he'd accepted the situation on its face, but kept a little part of his mind in denial out of fatherly love, but now there's no excuses, and he has to make a decision as to whether or not he can still take her down knowing the truth

2) I liked the reference to "Elseworlds P2" with Luke's offhanded mention about the Arkham Asylum breakout, although it does mean that this episode took place on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24th) despite a lack of Christmas decorations being present, and I can't decide whether or not that lack is an issue or just an oversight

3) I know there'd been some discussion about whether or not Beth and Kate are meant to be identical twins despite their adult selves being played by two completely different actresses who don't really look alike, but I think the flashbacks tonight made it clear that they are identical given the similarities in features between the actresses playing their younger selves (something you can really pick up on in the scene where we see young Beth on one side of the door and young Kate on the other)

4) It's interesting how much they've decided to change Beth/Alice's origins and personality from the comics, making her less brainwashed and truly crazy and more lucidly psychopathic

5) If Mary hadn't been so drunk, I feel confident that she would've asked Luke how he knew about there being a breakout at Arkham and gotten suspicious, but since it seems pretty likely that she'll be part of 'Team Bat' sooner rather than later, it'll be interesting to see if she remembers their conversations and gets curious once she sobers up

6) After tonight, we've only got 4 more episodes until Crisis on Infinite Earths, and yet we're still a little under a year out from it in-universe, so the show really needs to do some time skipping ASAP unless the plan is to have Batwoman 'get plucked out of time' by the Legends or the Monitor and brought 12 months into the future

7) I don't quite buy that Jacob wouldn't have found Jonathan Cartwright and his father's explanation more suspicious, but also can't help but wonder if the phone call incident didn't have an influence on his willingness to just take Catherine's doctored DNA results at face value because his mind couldn't take another 'false lead'

What of Uhura and Marlena in Mirror Mirror?

The censors were sleeping that week, I guess.

But, yes, Roddenberry is said to have added the double navel bit to GENESIS II to make up for all the navels he wasn't allowed to show on STAR TREK.

Which was another one of Roddenberry's tall tales, as Irene Kelly (Sirah in "The Omega Glory") also had a visible navel. Roddenberry must have thought fandom was so invested in his tales of network struggle that they would just ignore what was on screen..
