Batwoman
Season 1 - Episode 5 - "Mine Is a Long and a Sad Tale"
Kane/BW: "...before its too late." Its already too late. The biggest problem with this series is Kate's undying attempts to relate to/reclaim a relationship with her sister. No matter what Beth/Alice had to endure in her past, it does not excuse becoming a murderer (among other things, like defiling corpses), as she's a competent adult making clear, organized decisions about her life and her every criminal act. Kate being so emotionally/ethically compromised would be an interesting angle to explore as her misguided kid-gloves approach to Alice should cost Kate something on a personal level.
I do like the fact that her confidence in apprehending Alice was repaid with Alice simply being too smart for her by drugging her. She's still a newbie, and even if she was a bit more seasoned, her emotions are making her completely reckless.
Luke Fox: Easy to feel his irritation with Mary, but I almost felt the dread of another kind of relationship--if not now, then somewhere toward the end of the season.
Alice: So she was kidnapped by "Mouse's" father, subjected to his house of torture and butchery, but I was immediately reaching the conclusion that "Mouse" not only lived on, but is not a victim, but a victimizer. She considers him to be her "real" family, and after she's stabbed Jacob, she--and everyone else--should see it that way too, but Kate still thinks a murderer is worth saving. Egad.
Jacob: Smart to make the tracking of Alice as two-person operation, but I'm not certain it was wise to infodump the Alice-might-be-Beth tale to Sophie at this point. Much is made of Kate's feeling of loss about her sister (in childhood), but the agony a father feels for a lost or abducted child is almost beyond comprehension, as I've known two sets of parents who really dealt with that, and there's few horrors to match that.
Catherine Kane: Coming clean at all still does not ring as an entirely honest act. There has to be more to her past and present service to Alice.
Mary: No matter how much she's worked into the plot, she's a mess of a character walking the border of poor comic relief and flat out annoying.
NOTES: Okay, this isn't Luke Skywalker and Vader--there's no way young Kate could "sense" Beth in another location, whether that's a room, or anywhere else.
Kate still trying to dig up that old connection with Sophie with the finger "shush" against Sophie's lips. No respect for Sophie's marriage.
GRADE: B+.
