Study some of the cards and learn how the game writers tend to phrase things. Otherwise, come up with the most ridiculous thing you can imagine since the real answers are so far out.

Know your players. Balderdash is actually a highly intellectual game when played correctly. Pay close attention to the etymology in the words... when a word has the suffix "ism," your definition should be an obscure religion, belief system or political theory. When I play people I know well, it's easy sometimes to match the definition to the person and you can figure out the answer through process of elimination. If you don't know everybody at the table, watch them. Most people are without a poker face in Balderdash... when their fake definition is being read they will do something nonverbally (some will pucker up instantly and try to stay perfectly still, others will nod subconsciously, and sometimes act out or laugh). Remember that often times the definition or acronyms are part of the game precisely because they are ridiculous sounding. Don't be afraid to invent "International Society for the Protection of Endothermic Reptiles (ISPER)," and don't be surprised when people vote for it.

I typically own at this game :)

I am a master. Besides what has been mentioned, you also have the ability to sway when you're the one reading the options... you can be hesistant and doubting on the real one, while confident on your own. Good times. :D

Personally I think Balderbash is more fun if you don't take it all that seriously. I love voting for funny but unquestionably wrong answers.

Also, if you're really not sure of the correct answer, and you're early in the rotation, consider voting for your own answer. Someone else might be swayed by that.
