Bad news everyone - Futurama travesty in the making

I hope a riot breaks out.

If the voice actors are not there, then the only reason to show up is to bitch about Fox.

a new thought just came to me...do you think none of this is true and is an elaborate publicity stunt?

To what end? Renewing the series for a new season was all the publicity I needed. This just seeks to alienate the fanbase, whether it turns out to be true or not.

Oh, I don't know. I'm just speculating.

Perhaps they have something cooked up for Comic Con and want to do a bait-and-switch. It just seems very bizarre for all of this to come down this week, especially with the recasting deadline being today.

If TPTB wanted to recast, why not just wait until after the big promotional event?

I'm probably wrong, but I just wanted to throw that theory out there.

You're definitely right that all of this seems to be happening at the wrong time. I suppose we'll find out the real story in short order.

A publicity stunt to make us even madder at Fox? Well maybe. After all, there's no way anyone who pays attention to Fox's overall track record will be anything less than somewhat-ticked-off at Fox and all this may make us even more sympathetic towards the voice acting cast when they are hired back.

Apparently Groening and Cohen addressed the matter, hoping that Fox and the actors could reach an agreement soon, but it's still up in the air.

This may have been addressed upthread, but a voice actor friend of mine was called in for an audition, and told that by going from Fox to Comedy Central the budget has been lowered, so they're trying to cut costs. Whether this is true or even if Fox is using this to unfairly cut the actors' fees is another matter.

It meshes with what I've read at Futurama Point and Voice Actors in the News.

Tell your friend not to audition. He's only hurting himself or herself in the long run by siding with a network trying to strong-arm and underpay his fellow actors.

Fox has also apparently disinvited the cast members who were to attended SDCC tomorrow. At this point, Fox will probably have to rehire the original actors, who will be 10x more disgruntled. I wouldn't blame any of them for responding, "Fuck you," and forcing Fox to recast anyway.
Seriously? Where did you hear this?

I guess we'll find out more tomorrow, but this is really jacked up.
From the page linked to in the post you quoted--
Update: 7.23.2009 — From Phil LaMarr (via Facebook): “[20th Century Fox] just dis-invited the cast members who were supposed to appear [at the Futurama Comic-Con panel] so it may not be entertaining but it’ll certainly be interesting.”
Well, that's embarrassing. Thanks. :o

The budget issues isn't the problem, Fox is trying to nickel and dime everyone. The movie budget was next to nothing too so the episodes shouldn't be too different.

The movies' budget cuts came down to cutting out the orchestra, and using synthesizers like 95% of television. Fine. Christopher Tyng could produce a memorable soundtrack with two flugelhorns and yodeling goat. The acting, writing, and visual elements were mostly unaffected by budget cuts.

If they really do desperately need to slash the budget again, why go after the actors? If nothing else, couldn't they slash the CGI budget instead? I'd hate to lose it, but CGI is far more expendable than actors.

Just don't cut the budget that much!

The show has come back because of the fans, the fans that go out and buy the DVDs by the truckload. It's not like Fox won't be making a ton of money of the show anyways.

Well, at least it appears that this battle was short lived. Citing a story in The Toronto Star, Newsarama reports that the Futurama cast dispute has allegedly ended with the original cast returning under a compromise salary agreement. However, there's something a little confusing in the article...

Futurama also airs internationally in syndication, has produced four bestselling straight-to-DVD movies (later cut into episodes) and an upcoming feature film.

I assume that it means they are contracted to do a movie IF such a project comes to fruition. There is NO Futurama movie currently in production.
