Indeed, yes. Reasonably, the Klingons are capable but the plot has them charge in to combat situations either unprepared to operate as a team, utilize melee weapons, or taken down by a blow to the guy then spine.

No, thanks to the entity causing emergency bulkheads to seal, the Starfleet and Klingon forces were exactly evenly matched in terms of numbers. Further, the alien took away all the modern weaponry and made sure both sides were evenly matched with simple melee weapons.

That's right about balancing the numbers. Having only swords and bladed weapons probably favored the Klingons, I bet they practice with blades way more than Starfleet. (Except Sulu.)
