There is not a single Star Trek book for which you have to read a previous book. Star Trek books are luxury items -- you don't have to read any of them.

Having said that, A Burning House was meant to be a jumping-on point, so no it's not necessary to read the first three (five, really) books first, since it would completely contravene the whole frapping point of renaming it.

As to your second question, way too soon to tell.
