7.0 Quake Hits Haiti...

One of the Haitian ministers was on the radio this morning. He said "We need everything: food, clothing, relief supplies. Basically we are starting the country from scratch."

I wish I could donate...I don't have 2 pennies to rub together at this point...hope some missionaries from my church who are there in Haiti are ok.

:(

Picked one pretty much arbitrarily (Haiti Children) and gave $100.

Remember, donations are tax-deductible, so it doesn't cost you anything in the long run!

My church sends mission teams to Haiti on a regular basis. One got back just weeks ago.

Horrible disaster:(:borg:
My heart goes for the people of Haiti, who have suffered allready enough in the past. Now they have to deal with this horrible thing.
These photos are hearbreaking:((the destruction and human misery is obvious):

Im glad to read that the US, EU and other countries have and are sending help. At least Hait doesnt have to face this all without help:

I really admire the volunteers and other rescuers, who often risk their own well being to help others:). Proof that Humanity is also capable to show compassion to those in need.

It's terrible :(

I have no financial means to doante anything, but I do my best by paying attention in my blog and supplying information on the charities that are offering help.

And some of those are scrambling rightnow for any word on team members who were in Haiti at the time of the quake. We had a group getting ready to go next week......

Aid is coming in from all over, but they're having difficulties getting it to the people; the airport and harbor are badly damaged, and so are the roads. There's still nowhere near enough medical help for the injured. :(

For those of you who want to help but don't have a lot of cash, it's time to scrape together some change! Coinstar allows you to donate change to the American Red Cross and UNICEF without their regular coin counting fee, and both groups are sending aid to Haiti.

From the Red Cross web site:

If half of those Americans living within 2 miles of a Coinstar machine donated just $1 in spare change to the Red Cross, it would raise more than $65 million to support American Red Cross lifesaving services in communities nationwide!

They're also having problems with desperate people roaming the streets armed with machetes and the like. They're looking for food, water, whatever they can find and they'll take it however they can. That's becoming a strong problem against getting the needed supplies and personnel into the field where it's needed so badly.

I'm only hopeful that the aid isn't limited to fixing the needs for Now..but the future of that poor nation.
^This.

I hope that the nations that are sending aid will use this as an opportunity rebuild with better construction standards and help lay the foundation for an ethical government and an economy that provides the people a decent
standard of living.

Throwing money at Haiti won't solve the problem. It's like giving a drunk a bottle.

Anyway, Who's running Haiti? No one, say the people I wouldn't send a nickel to Haiti. I doubt one-tenth of what's intended to go there, via any type of donations, actually makes it into the hands of, or by means of, helping people.

Sorta flies in the face of that whole conservative "let the charities help the poor" mantra.

I don't know, and neither do you. Haiti has always been rife with political malfeasance and discord. The US sending millions in aid money is a notable gesture; however, anyone with half a brain would know that much, meaning a large percentage, of that money will be filling the bank accounts of specific people. Hell, that happened in New Orleans  But it's just better to play politics and call people names rather than facing the ugly truth.

^^ No, my donation to Save The Children won't be greasing anybody's palm.

Yes, and a lot of prisoners have apparently escaped from collapsed prisons, which makes matters even worse.
