£2,000 for people who trade in cars over 10 years old

I'm working on a 30 year old car that, when tuned properly, doesn't emit any more carbons than a car just off the line last month.

I doubt that, unless you put in a new motor too, at least if you compare it to a modern car with similar horsepower and weight. Automobile technology has improved a lot in the last 30 years - why wouldn't it? Even something as simple as bicycles are built much differently these days than they were a couple decades ago.

Yup -here's the paragraph on page 81 of the Budget report:

"4.16 To give a boost to the car industry during the current downturn, the Government announces the introduction of a vehicle scrappage scheme. A discount of £2,000 will be offered to consumers buying a new vehicle to replace a vehicle more than ten years old which they have owned for more than twelve months. The Government will set aside £300 million for this scheme with funding matched by manufacturers participating in the scheme. The Government will work with industry to introduce the scheme next month. The scheme will end by the start of March 2010, or when funding for the scheme has been used if earlier."

In other words, it'll only be applicable to a maximum of 150,000 new vehicles in the next ten months. How does that compare with the usual sales of new cars before the downturn?

My 2006 reg Peugeot car fucked up, I didn't get much money for it because its ECU was bodged and it knackered most of the car up. Whilst I was trying to get rid of it I needed a car fast and so bought a cheap run around. I'm in the middle of saving money up, if I wanted a new car I could probably get one now but the car is actually in quite good condition and I have other things to spend my money on then for a new car when I don't technically need one. If i'm going to get £2000 though for my 11 year old car then it's more than enough incentive to get a new one.
