New BSG Movie News

I recently came across this link out - an apparent line-up of events from Comic-Con. In particular:
Thursday July 24:
...
The Legacy and Return of “Battlestar Galactica”: Room 6BCF, 10:30 a.m. Actors Richard Hatch, Luciana Carro and Jamie Bamber join Dr. Kevin Grazier (science consultant for “Battlestar Galactica”) and producer Alec Peters to discuss the new “Battlestar Galactica” movie and show the trailer.
Did someone say "trailer"?? Is there actually something new out there now or is this Hatch's old trailer from the 90's being brought out to drum up support for the new project? I thought this thing was still tied down in the California court system between Larson and Universal, much less been able to produce a trailer! Did anyone happen to go to this and see what this was?

I didn't even realize there was a movie being discussed. Is it tied to the first TV series or the second? Or is it reboot #3?

All indications so far (based on conversations on ByYourCommand and Colonial Fleets) is that it is based on the original 1978 series. They even dragged out the original filming miniature (currently owned by Gary Cannavo) for some new promotional stills - and it still looks beautiful as the day Apogee built it. It's possible that 3D scans will be made of it going forward - a wise move due to the age and fragility of the original. As it stands, the production is being held up due to some residual litigation between Glen Larson and Universal based on some other non-BSG-related things. Once that's been resolved, it should be able to proceed. That's all I've been able to cobble together so far.

I have heard this for about 3 years now...will believe it when something more concrete is revealed.

Ithought Singer was doing it and it was another reboot of the attack on tbe colonies possibly focusing on the Pegasus

Much as I loved the Moore reboot, I do think a more faithful, space opera-style BSG would be a lot of fun to see again.

The original show may be greatly overrated, but there was something really cool and iconic about the Egyptian influenced lore and design work, and it would be cool to see a new show or movie do the idea justice. But in an actual fun way.

If you want to see Egyptian-influenced lore and design work done justice, in a fun way, watch Stargate and Stargate: SG-1. :techman:

Yes, because Egypt was FULL of Canadian trees. ;)

Um... no. I tried watching the various Stargate series many times, but the writing and characters were always way too generic and derivative for my taste.

I'd love them to finish off the 'original' series. With current tech, they could extract clips of the bearded Adama from Galactica '80, use Hatch, Benedict and Co. and do a proper finale / restart.

"Why does the Commander keep speaking of this Doctor Zee?"
"Shhhhh"

I wouldn't mind seeing a new version that is closer in spirit to the original.

^^^ Me too. I think that was the idea, especially if Larson gets involved again. Then there was a rumor a couple years ago that they were going to somehow merge the two universes together (TOS & NuBSG). I suppose it could be do-able, from a continuity standpoint, but it might also muddy the waters. As others have said, I'll believe it when I see it, but this one actually looks like it might grow legs. I just hope Singer doesn't get involved. Too many false starts and broken promises from that one - when he bailed out (I think it was the 3rd or 4th time) most recently, he gave BSG up for a remake of the Munsters - which apparently fell through. I question his priorities after that one...

Well, nuBSG opened the door with all that "It's happened before" malarkey, so making the 2 exist in the same universe isn't out of the question.

I wonder how close to the original this movie could be when most sci-fi movies (like Star Trek) have gone the all-action route.

^^^ Since BSG followed more closely in the footsteps of Star Wars, it was always a little more action-oriented than Trek was ever (initially) envisioned to be, at least, IMO. Space fighters quickly swarming about each other in epic battles, large ground assaults between two groups of adversaries, etc. I personally think the translation of TOS into a modern production sensibility and audience expectation would be pretty seamless.

If it goes the all-action route, that makes it pretty close to the original.

Yeah because the 70s BSG didn't have those issues at all!

dingdingding We have a winner!

I don't know, the classic series certainly didn't have the character development nuBSG did, but it had it's moments. And of course most of the action scenes were "stock footage alert!".

Obviously we got a lot more nuBSG, so there was time for development and action.
