Things we'll never see in Modern Who

How about the Time War with wobbly sets? ;)

Actually I never want to see the Time War...let's face it it'll probably be a dissapointment, they couldn't possibly do it justice, I think it's better to live in our heads!

I would quite like to see it, however I do confess that I agree it would lead to it being a let down, that or too similar to Peacekeeper Wars

Maybe the odd skirmish, but I have no desire to see timelords in silly hats shooting at Daleks ;)

I like the mystery of the Time War. In the classic series the, as I recall, the Timelords became more of a joke the more they showed of them. Better to be left to our imaginations.

it does lead to alot of discussion, I recall some heated ones on here, where people disagreed with how I think the Time War went, if they ever did do it for real, two things would happen

1) I might be proven wrong, and I cant let that happen

2) the "discussion" of what we think happened in the Time War would be taken away from us, if we dont have that then we have to go back to shouting "shes the Rani" at any random actress who is cast in the show or saying that you have a source that says that Paul McGann is coming back.

A pure historical.

Supposedly, they stopped doing these, even on the old series, by the 1970s because they noticed that they never got good ratings compared to more exotic alien stories with the Daleks or something. They didn't start doing historicals again 'till "The Time Warrior" when they decided to combine a medieval setting with a Sontaran invasion.

An older Doctor (like Eddie Izzard or Bill Nighy).

Or John Hurt.

Yeah, I would like to see those, but does not seem like the attention span for something like that is there with the audience.
What does that have to do with the attention span of the audience? A pure historical can be as frantically-paced as a science fiction story.

Yeah, all you're doing is substituting a 'real' baddie for an alien one. I can't see what difference it makes to attention spells? Are kids really going to pay more attention because there's a slitheen on screen than, say, some 17th century pirates?

^Perhaps bismarck_1892 means 'interest' rather than 'attention span'. I always thought that historicals were dropped because the audience preferred the SF stories.

"The Highlanders," in 1966 was the last "pure historical" until "Black Orchid" in Davison's first season.

Contrary to fan belief, historicals didn't bleed viewers. "The Highlanders" scored better ratings that the stories that followed it.

The truth is, Innes Lloyd just wasn't a fan of the form.
