Ok, in looking through the trailers, especially the most recent, a thought struck me. Let me just lists the facts as we see them in the trailer:

    - Kirk on ice planet
    - A distress signal is mentioned
    - We presumably see Vulcan get destroyed by Nero's weapon
    - We see Spock's mother witness the beam in the distance
    - We see Spock beam down on Vulcan and stuff's already crumbling
    - We see Spock on Vulcan with his mother and a couple of others (Sarek?)
    - Kirk on the Ent asks Spock are you or aren't you afraid?
    - Spock in rage pummeling Kirk
    - McCoy saying we have no Captain and no First Officer
    - Kirk takes command

Ok, my guess as to how this goes -

Distress call received, Enterprise responds and finds Nero in orbit around Vulcan trashing Federations ships, battle ensues, Pike hurt/killed taken from bridge. Spock takes command and beats a hasty retreat because odds are against victory/illogical to fight losing battle/etc etc.

Kirk gets in Spock's face "hey thats your family, we have to go back and fight, you'll lose everything, are you afraid or aren't you?" Spock kicks Kirk's ass and shoots him in a pod to the ice planet. However, Spock with Enterprise still nearby awaiting orders or something.

Old Spock shows up and rescues Kirk and locates exiled Scotty on ice planet. Spock uses Scotty's transporter genus to get back on the Enterprise. Old Spock confronts Skylar Spock, convinces him timeline all askew, and he needs to go to Vulcan with him on his time ship, (which I shall name Lollipop) - no time to waste. So maybe after the Spocks mindmeld to convince him, or something, off they go.

Now McCoy is on the bridge - hey we got no Capitain, no First Officer - WTF?!? So Jimmy takes the chair and says fuckit - I need to fire some phasers and hauls ass to Vulcan. On the way Pike recovers enough to take back command as they arrive at Vulcan which is still in one piece. Pike says ok, time to end this charade - Kirk, take Sulu and redshirt - dive down to the platform and disable the weapon, I am taking a security team and going over to try and take over the Narada/get Nero. Battle ensues on Narada, Pike really gets fucked up but Kirk and Sulu can't disable beam. however Nero realizes Kirk is on weapon platform and witnesses Kirk's retreat prompting Kirk was a great man line...

Spock beams up with family and Enterprise warps away, possibly damaged. Pike in sickbay, dying makes Kirk Captain of Enterprise (Hey not my timeline - JJs framework I am using here), Vulcan gets destroyed in the meanwhile and now Nero heads towards Earth.

Now here is the scene of the movie - Enterprise returns to confront Nero and Kirk in Captain's uniform hails Nero as Captain Kirk, Nero realizes oops, Kirk's greatness is his destiny and here he is, despite his best efforts, Captain Kirk..which is when he screams fire everything...blah blah blah

Well thats all I got so far. What do you think/

There's probably some sort of twist no one's aware of.

On the order of magnitude where Nero isn't really the main villain, or something.

I still don't get the whole, "Kirk go's from cadet to Captain in one easy step." Even without a captain and first officer, there are plenty of officers left onboard.

I'm just waiting to find out how the ice planet on which Spock strands Kirk just happens to be where Scotty is.

Also, old Spock decides to give Scotty the knowledge of how to beam aboard a ship at warp because old Spock realizes Scotty will invent it, anyway. If the timeline is so screwed up, how can he assume Scott would do that in this time's future? Also, since the timeline is so screwed up, why even bother in the first place with whether or not Scott would inventually invent it? Just do it. Apparently, things are never going to be the same, anyway.

That's what's confusing me, right now.

No way would they actually leave Vulcan destroyed at the end of the film.

Well, we now know old Spock's ship is called Jellyfish (Countdown #3), so Lollipop is actually not so absurd!

I think cadet Kirk may take command during a crisis, but Pike will recover and get it back. This way Pike can later get disfigured and wheelchair bound. Later in years when Pike's accident occurs and a new captain is needed, Spock is the logical choice. But since he never has sought command he defers. Pike then uses his influence to convince Starfleet to hand the ship to Kirk since in the fight against Nero he showed such skill and character.

From the trailer I'm digging Nero. I'd like to see him survive somehow the end of the movie...though I doubt it heavily. Plus I think Bana's a very good actor and I'd be more then happy for him to appear in multiple Trek movies (or even a new Trek series).

I would really like them to. Really make it a brave new timeline.

I agree. Initially I thought it was Kirk taking over as sort of a fill-in/temporary commander because of a crisis, but then in one of the earlier trailers there is a shot of him in Command Gold shirt with the Captain's stripes on the sleeves.

I guess I figured that the new enterprise was specifically designed for time travel and to fight Nero. That is why Pike grabs kirk - He knew his father and thought that the son might be able to help. Old Spock might have something to do with it.

It seemed to me that the in the trailer the ship was shooting through a effect that didn't look all that different from the First Contact time travel effect. Just a guess, but I think that the crew was pegged specifically from the academy to go on this mission by Pike himself.

That is why Kirk is on his cycle looking at the ship as it is being built - he knows that it is going to go back in time and possibly save his father. (They can't go to the future and stop nero from going back in time, because that timeline doesn't exist.)

However, I don't think that they manage to fix the timeline at the end - I think that Kirk's father will stay dead.

I don't know. Within the story, it spells, "Fail," for Pike and the Enterprise crew. Big fail. Failures happen, but these were supposed to be (or are destined to be) heroic people. Saving worlds became almost cliche for them. Fifty years later I can hear Kirk and McCoy now: "Remember our first mission together, Bones?" "Sure do, Jim. That was when we couldn't stop Nero and he destroyed Vulcan." Ahh, memories.

Why not destroy Earth, too before Nero is stopped? Make it a really brave new timeline.

If she blows up, she blows up. The movie could still be great. But I ain't gonna like it. :scream:

WARNING: This guesswork is based on 20 minute preview leaks, as well as other information confirmed accurate from various sources. SERIOUS SPOILERS !!!!

Star of the movie, Narada arrives through the ominous-looking angry star.

It is intercepted by the Kelvin, under Captain Robau, with George Kirk as first officer.

During the battle, the Kelvin is pasted, Robau is killed. George Kirk orders an evacuation, including his wife Winona, carrying an unborn James Kirk.

As George rams the Kelvin into the Narada, protecting the escaping shuttles, Kirk is born on one of the shuttles, and is safe.

Cut to Vulcan, as a young Spock is lectured by Sarek about controlling his emotions. Amanda consoles him somewhat, with Sarek disapproving.

Cut to Iowa, and a Corvette speeds across the landscape, chased by the robot police bike.

As Kirk leaps from the corvette, and the car tumbles over the cliff, the boy is asked his name, to which he defiantly says "My name is James Tiberius Kirk".

He is then arrested by the cop, and taken home, where his Uncle is arguing with Winona about what to do with the kid.

Kirk runs out, and starts messing around with George Jr. and talks about getting away from the mess.

Cut to Vulcan, as a now adult spock is standing before his father, Sarek, and the Vulcan high Council.

This is where Sarek lectures spock about which path he will choose.

He states, to the disapproval of Sarek, that he sees himself as being more useful in Starfleet, because of the opportunities to practice science in the field.

Back in Iowa, an adult Kirk rides into a bar, and gets into a fight trying to make a move on Uhura.

The Starfleet cadets try to protect her, though she's holding her own with class, and Captain Pike breaks up the fight.

After the fight, Captain Pike sits down, and tells Kirk about his father saving 800 lives in 12 minutes, reflecting on Kirk's high test scores, and daring him to do better.

The next scene, Kirk rides out to the Iowa Shipyards, where the Enterprise is being built. He takes a moment to look, then he enters the facility, where he tells Pike he'll pass the 4 year course in 3 years.

On the shuttle over, he meets McCoy, and Uhura is also on the shuttle for the Academy.

Now in the Academy, Kirk gets into some Hijinks with Uhura's roommate, an Orion, and gets Kirk charming.

Uhura then comes in, and Kirk has to hide under the bed, while Uhura gets changed.

Uhura spots him, calls him out, and they get into a playful exchange where he's kicked out of the room.

We see some other things at the Academy, including an assembly for the "Final Test". The Kobayashi Maru simulation. The instructor on this test, giving the speech about "Fear. Fear of certain death." is Spock, and Pike may be present.

Kirk, of course, is frustrated that the test got the better of him.

He then sleeps with a technician, and charms his way into the simulation code, and reprograms the simulation to provide a way to win.

Kirk then becomes the first cadet to beat the test, but with a great controversy.

He is then stopped from graduating while they figure out what to do about his cheating.

As the rest of the cadets graduate, there is a distress call about a storm on Vulcan, and they need the ships to go on in a hurry.

McCoy injects Kirk with a virus to exploit Starfleet Regulations to sneak him on board. the ship they go to is the Enterprise.

Kirk hears an announcement by Chekov on the journey about the details about the storm, and Kirk recognizes the events described as being the same as the mysterious Romulan ship that destroyed his father's ship.

He rushes to the Bridge, D. McCoy in tow, and causes a ruckus trying to explain what was happening, hindered by the effects of the virus (swelling toung making speech difficult).

Pike wants him thrown off the Bridge, but spock thinks it possible he's right.

Pike orders shields up, the Enterprise comes out of warp by Vulcan, and the other ships that went before them were blown to bits in orbit.

The Narada is lowering the drilling system, and fires on the Enterprise. Becuase her shields are up, it gives them a fighting chance.

Kirk, the Chief Engineer and Sulu are dropped off for a space diving operation to disable the drill, while Pike goes on to try and negotioate with the attacker, and find out more about what is goign on.

Spock, seeing his home planet under attack, then finds a way to beam down to evacuate the Vulcan high council, including Sarek and Amanda, from the surface.

During the dive, the Chief Engineer's chute doesn't open, and he crashes to his death.

Kirk and Sulu fight with the Romulan on the drilling platform, but cannot stop the mechanism.

Spock manages to rescue his parents and get back to the Enterprise.

As something else is dropped into the core of Vulcan, Sulu is knocked off the platform. Kirk immediately dives after him, grabbing him, and they are beamed away.

The Narada mves away from the planet, and the Enterprise does the same, under Chekov's control.

The ships Chief Medical Officer and Communications Officer are killed dirung the battle to stop the Narada with Pike likely on board.

    Vulcan then implodes.

We know Kirk is going to take command at the end of the movie. The big question is which Kirk.

Okay people, here's the second part of my plot guesswork:

    SPOILER HEAVY !!!!

Once the Narada heads off, Vulcan is gone, and the Enterprise is left waiting in the mess, Kirk and Spock have a face off on the Bridge.

Spock and Kirk argue about the fact that Spock beamed down to Vulcan when he shoudl have been commanding the ship.

Spock's emotions come out, and he orders the ship to pass Delta Vega, exile Kirk off the ship there, then head off to find the Narada.

This is exactly what they do, and since the Transporters were badly damaged, Kirk is sent out in an escape pod to the icy landscape.

As Kirk gets out of the escape pod, he climbs out of the landing crater, and runs into a large, rather mean creature.

He runs from the beast as it attempt to grab him, and just as it's about to, a much more massive creature punches through the ice and eats the first one, leaving Kirk as irrelevent.

Kirk then has a long trek over the ice, to meet up at the Lithium Cracking Station.

There, an on Vulcan, Spock, introduces himself, and explains that the ship is the Narada, he is from the future, that so is the Narada and Nero, states that Nero is out for revenge after the destruction of Romulus as well as his entire family, and that he's come to destroy Vulcan, Earth, and the Federation, and that he narrowly missed killing Kirk before he could fulfill his destiny to command the enterprise.

Spock then introduces Kirk to Scotty, and gives Scotty his own formula from the future for trans-warp beaming.

Spock also explains that he should use Starfleet regulations to get Spock out of command by proving him to be emotionally unstable, so that he can take command and stop Nero.

Scotty is working on the station Transporter, and explains that he was marooned there for vaporizing Admiral Archer's beagle.

He and his small alien assistant get things ready, Kirk asks Spock "Isn't all this cheating?" to which he replies "I learned it from an old friend."

With a Live Long and Prosper and a Vulcan Salute, Kirk and Scotty are then beamed onto the Enterprise.

Once they get on the Enterprise, Kirk and Scotty go to the Bridge, and Kirk confronts Spock about the events on Vulcan, and Spock's emotional reactions. Spock lashes out at kirk, since he is unable to use logic to win the argument.

Spock is then taken off the Bridge, and McCoy gives his "Now What? I have no captain, andno first officer to replace him" speach.

Perhaps with a line about having no options.

Kirk says "Yeah we do" and takes command.

He then assigns Scotty to take over the dead Chief Engineer's role and get her repaired and prepared for the inevitable encounter with the Narada.

He assigns uhura as Chief of Communications, and McCoy is already Chief Medical Officer.

He then orders the Enterprise to start seeking the Narada.

They find the Narada is heading for Earth, and is about to attack, with the drill being lowered etc.

Knowing what this means, Kirk orders a boarding party to see if they could get the Captain. He speaks to Spock about things, and they reconcile.

Spock takes his post on the Bridge, and the Enterprise goes in to stop the Narada.

They start by opening communications with Nero, and there is an exchange between Kirk and Nero.

    To be continued ...

    some thoughts..
i still believe a number of years have passed from when kirk was in the academy and the later events when he takes over.
bones especially looks older and what he says sounds like something said by someone who has been out in space for awhile.

spock could very well be affected by the destruction of vulcan.
he felt the crew of the intrepid die.
and that from a very long distance off.
if they were near vulcans most of the people on the planet die.

i thought i read some where pike sends kirk to the ice planet.
    maybe old spock contacted him.
