News USS Dauntless

Mostly, the ship looks a little different, but that's clearly what's happened here. It's like how the Mirror Universe Terran rebels built their own Defiant after taking some scans/stealing blueprints because they wanted an awesome warship. Starfleet wanted a ship that could use a slipstream drive, and the ship already looked Starfleet enough, so they just went with it.

According to an interview with one of the producers, their reasoning was if Voyager had enough data from that encounter to make their own slipstream drive, they probably got enough detailed information for Starfleet to create their own version of the Dauntless.

Also he confirmed the Dauntless does have slipstream, but it will be rarely used because of the rarity and difficulty synthesizing the beneite crystals.

They're similar, but not the same.

Okay so... going from pics on Tumblr and Twitter, the real Admiral Janeway's ship is the USS Dauntless. So Starfleet took a look at the fake Starfleet ship from "Hope and Fear" and built it for real, right down to the bridge design?

It’s not 100% exactly the same design. It’s a cross between the Dauntless NX-01-A and the Voyager prototype. But the bridge looks to be an exact match.

I can get the exterior being similar (modern Trek takes a lot of lore from the novels and a certain profile is required for slipstream to work) but exactly copying the interiors of a fake Starfleet ship too?

I do wonder what goes through their heads. Or if they watched "Hope and Fear" to the end.

Why give it the same name as a fake ship though? And copy the bridge décor of a ship that's not even a Federation design but put on some fake Starfleet LCARS for a day??

I get the need to make a Voyager reference, but I feel they'd have done better to use the Vesta-class quantum slipstream ship from the novelverse instead. It's a reference too far, since the closer you look, the less it works.

I guess they checked and they didn't have a USS Dauntless in service at the time. Maybe it was called the Dauntless Replica Project during development and the name stuck.

Also I would've liked to see a Vesta-class instead as well, just because it's a prettier ship.

Voyager crew got DETAILED sensor scans of the ship from the inside out. They basically got to learn how to use the ship through a fake interface no less (which DID work btw because the fake LCARS interface was like a translation skin for the underlying alien UI).

I guess that Starfleet simply had a look at the design and said: 'this is doable, but certain things need to be changed externally to make it a reality.'

After all, prior to VOY encountering Slipstream technology, Starfleet hadn't even hypothesized or theorized about it. and VOY only made the v1 of the technology work with Quantum Stresses... and with V2, the quantum stresses were no longer the issue, but calculating proper phase corrections was.
Its likely that Arturis Dauntless had a more Slipstream decidaced computer technology capable of doing that... and knowing Starfleet, they'd probably just want to TEST the thing properly before they decide refitting their entire fleet with the thing (after all, we don't want a repeat of what happened to VOY in 'Timeless').

So, from Starfleet's point of view, I guess they thought: 'if the original design works well with Slipstream without issues VOY encountered, then we can certainly do it ourselves but our technology IS a bit different and the ship's hull will be slightly different as a result, BUT it WILL work regardless.'

Say what you will, but the Aventine isn't canon (at least until/if they decide to make it canon)... and as I mentioned before, the writers could still introduce the Aventine as a second Slipstream dedicated ship if you will.

As for why they'd name it 'Dauntless'... well, its possible that Starfleet wanted to pay a tribute/homage to Arturis species for them being (completely?) assimilated by the Borg (which WAS in part VOY's doing because Janeway did help the Borg to fight species 8472 at the time - granted as Janeway pointed out, 8472 said back then they intended on destroying everything, so might as well go with the Borg - or an enemy you DO know and is native to the galaxy - plus, 8472 wasn't giving us an impression they were willing to team up with VOY... nope, they wanted to PURGE the galaxy).

EDIT: as others noted, Starfleet probably didn't feel the need they had to change the bridge design or internal layout much/at all because it was already mostly similar to Starfleet's... plus the original design seemed to have been Slipstream only... no Warp drive (unlike Starfleet's version). Best to keep changes to a minimum.

Really? I actually found SF's own version of the Dauntless less pretier than the fake Dauntless... but it can get away with it with it actually being made by Starfleet (the design difference could easily be in the fact the fake Dauntless never had a Warp Drive, only Slipstream [noticeable absence of antimatter on the fake Dauntless after all]... whereas Starfleet builds EVERY ship with Warp Drive in mind).

The Vesta class ship seemed to have an odd design. They seemed a bit... unnecessarily clunky in most views where the flow of the ship ends up 'broken' except the side-view for example...in other views it just looked... odd.

I'm just sad that the Dauntless didn't expand the StarDrive section for more Cargo volume.

In fact, they deleted parts of it for whatever reason.

The StarTrek.com database entry confirms this is also registered as a Dauntless class ship.

I’m looking forward to the Eaglemoss model of it and hope that it’s parts become interchangeable with the Dauntless class in STO.

And hey, shouldn’t it have been the USS Dauntless NX-01-B? ;)

No, because SF's NX registry doesn't work like that from what we know.

I guess its possible the VOY crew (at the time) thought that NX-01-A (with the fake Dauntless they encountered) could have been a new designation done intentionally by Starfleet because it has a very different hull geometry and overall technology (and because they were away from the Federation for nearly 4 years at the time)... though 'someone' could have mentioned outloud that the NX-01-A thingy was 'incorrect'... but then could have been corrected by another crewmember who said 'maybe its been designated into its own category because this thing doesn't have Warp drive) - for example of course.
