News Kong on the Planet of the Apes, King Kong/Planet of the Apes crossover comic

Today they announced that Boom! Studios will be crossing over two of the world's biggest non-human ape related franchises with the new comic book miniseries, Kong on The Planet of the Apes. The series will pick up after the original PotA movie , and follows a group of ape soldiers lead by Dr. Zaius and Gen. Ursus who discover Kong in the Forbidden Zone and then end up traveling to Skull Island.
The series is being written by Ryan Ferrrier with art by Carlos Magno, and the first of six issues will be released in November.
 
What a coincidence... just a week or so ago, I had the idle thought, "They should do a King Kong/Planet of the Apes crossover sometime."

Or maybe it's not such a coincidence. Really, these cutesy franchise crossovers have become so ubiquitous in comics that you don't have to wait long for any given crossover to happen.
 
In a way--this story has already aired. Remember the Return to the Planet of the Apes cartoon?

Am I the only one getting tired of all the comics crossovers between different franchises? The occasional one is fun, but they've become so frequent and routine that it just feels like an assembly line now. They used to be unexpected, but now they just feel obligatory.

Although maybe I'm wrong to call it a recent trend. Way back in the early '90s, there was a comics crossover between Planet of the Apes and Alien Nation, called Ape Nation.
 
Vampires and Apes, I'd like to see that movie. I wonder if Apes would keep a werewolf as a pet? The possibilities are endless, especially if you throw in some zombies. Zombie Apes, now that would be cool. Seriously.

I'm loving it. I'll confess the only one I've read so far is The Primate Directive (the Star Trek: TOS/PotA crossover), but I'm getting a blast out just seeing what kinds of combinations they can come up. I'm we get some more different Trek ones once the second GL crossover is over. I'm pissed that the digital version Doctor Who/TNG crossover got pulled after Doctor Who changed publishers, I really wanted to read that one. I'm tempted to just get from a third party seller on Amazon, but typically try to avoid that.

But that seems more like a metatextual level of enjoyment. Liking the idea of the crossovers is one thing, but when they do them so often, when it becomes a matter of routine rather than an exceptional thing, what are the odds that the actual stories will be anything special rather than just going through the expected motions? There are still some good ones coming out, yes, but the more these things are done, the more ordinary they become. I just think it would serve them better to save them for special occasions, when there's really a story worth telling, rather than trying to churn out as many as possible.
