History has greenlit the unscripted series “In Search Of” with Zachary Quinto attached as host and executive producer, the cable network announced Tuesday.

Inspired by the iconic 1970s series of the same name, the show will examine unexplained phenomena from all over the world. Each episode will follow Quinto as he investigates a different subject within a dynamic theme – such as alien encounters, mysterious creatures, UFO sightings, time travel and artificial intelligence – and searches for the truth to some of the world’s greatest mysteries. The original “In Search Of” series aired from 1977-1982 and was hosted by Rod Serling and later by Leonard Nimoy following Serling’s death.

I used to love watching that show. My memory must not be that good because I don't remember Rod Serling hosting it.

Surprised me, I only remembered Nimoy. Going by wiki, the first 3 were hosted by Serling and Nimoy took over after Serling passed away.

So is Quinto going to end up recapitulating Nimoy's entire career?

I'm not thrilled that this show is coming back. There's way too much tabloidy pseudoscience "documentary" programming on TV as it is. We need more real science shows like Cosmos, not this crap that panders to superstition. I mean, I watched the show regularly as a kid, but I was way more gullible then, and shows like this just fed that gullibility. It took proper science programs, like NOVA, to teach me how to think more critically. And books, of course.

Maybe Quinto will also direct another remake of Three men and a Baby. ;)

I'm kinda with you on this... On top of that, Josh Gates' "Expedition Unknown" series pretty well covers a LOT of what "In Search of Did," at least with the big stuff... And does it better... We all know Josh isn't going to find (insert legend here), but the think I like about the show is that it focuses on the true historical aspects behind the legends.

I have to agree with Christopher. This is a step backward. I watched the original show and liked it... but that was before Carl Sagan explained why that stuff was pseudoscience without one shred of credible evidence, not to mention an anthropology teacher who showed the "Chariots of the Gods" film in class and then explained why everything in it was nonsense.

Well, I'm 40 years older now, and 40 years smarter. I won't be wasting my time with this crap.

Oh, I love this crap. After all, I'm into Fantasy and Science Fiction. :rommie: It's a shame that some people believe it's true, but if I let what people believe bother me I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything.

I loved In Search Of... glad to see it’s coming back.
Side note, why wasn’t Star Trek III called In Search Of Spock?
Actually, it was originally announced as In Search Of Spock, then changed-- either because it was too cute or because of copyright concerns.

I miss the days when new TV shows were influenced by older ones, instead of just hijacking the name for cheap recognition that won't last if the actual content is rubbish.

The original I.S.O. was entertaining but a fair amount of it was easily debunkable. So were bits of "Unsolved Mysteries", "Beyond Belief", etc. It's entertainment first and foremost. Has the new show so little, or think that it's just an in-joke, that a remake show has a remake actor hosting the same show that the original actor who played the original character did?

I only remember Nimoy as well. Interesting that someone else hosted it, and Rod Serling of all people. Makes a certain sense, The Typecast Twilight Zone... unless he preferred the genre as opposed to being forced to remain there...

Wow. Sounds like a new take on the opening of the 1970s "Battlestar Galactica", hehe. :D

Hilarious that the ancient crockery that held a copper tube and filled with HCl, which I'm sure there was a local spring nearby at the time, could generate enough electricity to power a ship... or a few hundred of such crockery, none of which looks like it would withstand much abuse in the first place... much less produce 1 volt at - how much current/amps, again? What were they powering, since anyone left here with paperwork on how to make a primitive flashlight with the power of a 0.3 lumens must ahve come in handy back then. The vase may be over 2000 years old, but when was HCl first discovered?
Rather a few centuries later, by 800AD according to some sources... ;)

Yeah, it all seems like a crock to me too.

There's a huge difference between presenting something as fiction for entertainment and presenting it as fact to deceive and defraud people. There's a reason why stage magicians are the ones most driven to expose frauds who use magicians' techniques to pass themselves off as psychics -- because using their methods to cheat and victimize people demeans the whole profession. As a science fiction writer, I feel the same way about pseudoscience like this. It's not in the spirit of what I do, it's a corruption of what I do.

Science fiction, when done well, can actually educate people about science and the universe. Hard SF is based on legitimate scientific principles with only a limited amount of poetic license; I learned a lot about science and the universe from the SF I read growing up. Even with more fanciful SF, the audience ideally knows better than to expect the science to be strictly accurate, and if they're curious, they can look up the real thing and learn more about it from there. (Although unfortunately a lot of people do seem to accept certain sci-fi myths as fact, like the idea that people freeze instantly or explode when exposed to space.) But pseudoscience like this attempts to pass off nonsense as real science, to create confusion about the nature of reality rather than clarity, to mislead people and undermine their ability to think critically. And that's harmful.

It's sad that his career has come to this. He is so much better than being a reality tv show, host. I feel the same for Jane Lynch. This hosting thing feels more like a George Takei type of thing.

Except this isn't a reality show. Astrology is nonsense, tarot cards are nonsense, Ouija boards are nonsense, no UFO report has ever turned up anything proven to be of genuinely alien construction, and the idea that aliens made the pyramids and Stonehenge is ridiculous.

This show is just another way of dumbing down the viewing public, and it's really disappointing that anyone thought it would be a good idea.

I used to have the "In Search Of..." books, and decided to get rid of them. I didn't even donate them anywhere. They're in the landfill now, because I decided not to even remotely encourage anyone else to read this nonsense and think it had validity.

Given how close Quinto and Nimoy were in Nimoy's last few years, this may be more about paying tribute to another Nimoy project than about being in a career slump. Still, yeah, he could do better.

Maybe but their is nothing wrong in people sort of seeing the world as a more magical and mysterious place than it might be. It isn't any more dangerous than any other tv show. It's nice to believe in aliens and ghosts an also to have faith if it makes people happy. As long as people don't hurt others then it doesn't really matter what the things are in life that makes them happy. Who cares in the end if it's true or not. For every person interested in this stuff you will have others who are into pure science and for them that is what makes them most happy.
