Would the Federation have a true interplanetary internet?

...Although one might assume that some of the more powerful members of the UFP would have erected their own networks before joining the UFP, and that those nets would still be standing after a couple of centuries (because it really wouldn't pay to use relays that fizz out after just a hundred years). It might be that parts of this network menagerie could not be completely integrated to the overall UFP system, giving an overlapping collection of nets with possibly different performances and different applications.

We do hear of Kasidy Yates having serious communications problems with Cestus III, an established colony, even though our Starfleet heroes braving the frontier only seem to suffer from a comm lag of a couple of hours in the very worst case. It would seem some people are more equal than others, then.

I don't mean an Internet as we have in real life, but something similar lol.. there would have to be means to communicate between computers on different starships, bases, planets, etc.

Geordi and Data were probably the network/systems admins for the Enterprise lol...
