Best Actor winners have appeared in comics-based films since 1978, beginning with Brando and Hackman. But until last year, the last two major leading men in film I'd have predicted to appear in Marvel productions were Sean Penn and Robert Redford.
So at least in terms of MARVEL films, I consider Redford's appearance in CAP II a mega-threshold. In a world where Paul Giamatti will play the Rhino, and perhaps 55 percent or more current major actors inevitably pop up in comic blockbusters at some point, Will Sean Penn similarly take the plunge? (He did SHANGHAI SURPRISE, after all.)
Nicolas Cage was memorably slammed by Penn for appearing in THE ROCK, CON AIR and other '90s action films almost immediately after winning his LEAVING LAS VEGAS Oscar. (Personally, I'd slam EVERYONE in THE ROCK except for Ed Harris and David Morse.) Following Penn's comments, Cage declared their ''friendship was now closed.'' If Penn ever did go Marvel, as Cage so unmemorably did twice, I can't imagine Cage not commenting on such a move.
But what if Penn did? Redford, like Susan Sarandon in SPEED RACER, implied he appeared in the film for his grandkids. I'd say we're at least five years away from Penn doing it. But, if he did, which roles in Marvel might he be considered for?
Or which could he be drafted into forcibly?
The only way that would work is having Ray Walston play Galactus.Sean Penn will reprise his role as Jeff Spicoli. Spicoli will be approached by Galactus to become the Silver Surfer. "Gnarly dude!"
I admit that I know and care so little about Sean Penn that I'm unsure what this is in reference to or why it's ironic, but wouldn't Mr. Hand be a lady?In an ironic twist, he will appear on Agents of SHIELD as Mr. Hand.
Maybe he could be a Spider-Man villain who punches photographers that has a run-in with Peter.
