Would Sean Penn ever go Marvel-movie?

Best Actor winners have appeared in comics-based films since 1978, beginning with Brando and Hackman. But until last year, the last two major leading men in film I'd have predicted to appear in Marvel productions were Sean Penn and Robert Redford.

So at least in terms of MARVEL films, I consider Redford's appearance in CAP II a mega-threshold. In a world where Paul Giamatti will play the Rhino, and perhaps 55 percent or more current major actors inevitably pop up in comic blockbusters at some point, Will Sean Penn similarly take the plunge? (He did SHANGHAI SURPRISE, after all.)

Nicolas Cage was memorably slammed by Penn for appearing in THE ROCK, CON AIR and other '90s action films almost immediately after winning his LEAVING LAS VEGAS Oscar. (Personally, I'd slam EVERYONE in THE ROCK except for Ed Harris and David Morse.) Following Penn's comments, Cage declared their ''friendship was now closed.'' If Penn ever did go Marvel, as Cage so unmemorably did twice, I can't imagine Cage not commenting on such a move.

But what if Penn did? Redford, like Susan Sarandon in SPEED RACER, implied he appeared in the film for his grandkids. I'd say we're at least five years away from Penn doing it. But, if he did, which roles in Marvel might he be considered for?

Or which could he be drafted into forcibly?

I vote "None."

Sean Penn will reprise his role as Jeff Spicoli. Spicoli will be approached by Galactus to become the Silver Surfer. "Gnarly dude!"

I've never given much thought as to whether Sean Penn would do any film at all, and don't intend to start now. I like some of his work, but not all of it. He's usually all right as an actor and he used to be in the news a lot for punching people. So he'll fit.

Yeah, I think the answer is if the role is right. What's right? I have no idea.

Sometimes the role is "right" because the actor's agent says "What are ya, crazy? Take the money!"

He does seem to do fewer mainstream/paycheck movies than just about any other top-rated movie star, but if he'd do Gangster Squad, I don't see why a Marvel movie'd be out of the question, though the period aspect of Squad may have been a big selling point with him.

For that matter, has any actor as highly regarded as him done so little genre work?

He has taken roles for the money. How else do you explain Gangster Squad?

Maybe Penn would do a one-off villain that dies at the end.

In an ironic twist, he will appear on Agents of SHIELD as Mr. Hand.
I admit that I know and care so little about Sean Penn that I'm unsure what this is in reference to or why it's ironic, but wouldn't Mr. Hand be a lady?

Or is that the joke? Did I ruin the joke? I honestly have no idea. Sean Penn basically doesn't exist in my worldview, he's had so little impact on me.

^It's a Fast Times at Ridgemont High reference. Sean's character, typical weed smoking surfer high school kid, was always giving teacher Mr. Hand a hard time. A classic movie definitely worth seeing for the large ensemble cast of stars before they were famous.

^ Right, plus Victoria Hand in Agents of SHIELD to finish the little joke <Spock>Extremely little...</Spock>.

With Redford in Cap, and Glenn Close soon to be in Guardians, I don't see why not

Maybe he could be a Spider-Man villain who punches photographers that has a run-in with Peter.

Actually, now that you mention newspaper photograhters, he could easily play J Jonah Jameson and have it work. He's actually older than JK Simmons was when he first played the part
