Heres the thread for all talk for the upcoming FIFA WORLD CUP 2010.

4 years after Italy lifted the World Cup for the 4th time in Germany, we gather in Africa for the 1st time in the history of the World Cup. The Rainbow nation is ready to throw a party on Juen 11th and I cannot wait

Yeah, every four years I hope the US will go the distance and every four years i get kicked in the nuts and punched in the face. If the US beats England then maybe I'll pay more attention

I'm really looking forward to this. I'm not a huge football fan in terms of support, but I love the game and will watch just about any match.

The best players on the grandest stage of all is extremely exciting to me. I love tournament/knock-out football.

Who will win? I'm gonna play safe and go for Spain. I had Germany as my dark horse, but now Ballack is out I'm not so sure.

My TV broke this week. This would be an actual disaster just before the World Cup. I'm very grateful for streaming TV online.

I love the World Cup. I don't care who wins, I just love the games. I'll quite happily sit through Honduras/Switzerland.

The World Cup is the time every 4 years I really like football for a few weeks. And not even just the England games
England v. USA is an interesting opening. On paper, we should thrash them, along with the rest of the group, but England have always been good at forgetting to read the paper. And we had... issues against Mexico despite the win.

ETA: Oh, and their mascot is so much better than London 2012. But I think that applies to all sporting events, ever.

I feel England could draw USA though I would still think we might knick it. My predictions are...

England 2-1 USA
England 3-1 Algeria
England 2-1 Slovenia

End at the last 8 most likely again for us.

My sentimental favourites are Slovakia, Serbia and Algeria, but I'm afraid fucking Brazil is going to take it yet again...

Just looking at the who-plays-who. We really really want to come top of our group. If we come 2nd that places us in a half of the draw that is not pleasant: if we did and Germany came 1st, our second round match would be against them. And winning would likely set us up for a quarter final against Argentina, with Portugal or Brazil storming up to the Semi from the other quarter. Ouch.

Only time I follow Futbol so I'm looking forward to it. Don't know who is on the teams (Is Ronaldino and Kaka, which is a name I absolutely love, still on Brazil?) but it's mainly the sport I guess. Also, I wonder if we'll see anymore Headbutts. I remember when that happened it was so hilariously random.

Kaka is still there, but Ronaldinho unfortunately has pretty much sucked for a couple years, especially since he left Barcelona.

I think Australia has a decent chance of getting into the next round - Ghana is weak and the Germans won't take you seriously.

Definitely the harder way to go, but I don't think Germany would cause too many problems.

Think we'll top our group though;

2-0 against USA
3-0 against Algeria
2-0 against Slovenia

Should set us up for a 2nd round game against Serbia (IMO), and after that potentially France in the QFs, and Brazil (or possibly Holland) in the SFs.

I'd take that. Can't see Serbia beating us, and France are due a beating. Brazil/Holland in the SFs would be tasty, and Holland's penalty shootout record is about as woeful as our's from memory.

No offense, I wish England the best (it's always fun when they are doing well), but that's extremely optimistic imo. Yes, England will probably get to the 1/8 finals, will probably even win their group, but none of the opponents in that group are push-overs (remember that Slovenia beat Hiddink's Russia in the play-off for example!). And I'm still convinced the Serbian team could achieve greatness in this World Cup. You can only hope Capello doesn't think the same as you.

Ok, sorry, it's a genetic condition. As others have said, I don't follow soccer very much (shocking for an Italian, I know), but the World Cup is a special time. It's like a religious ceremony around here, with family and friends gathering and partaking is some mysterious cathartic event. It's quite a show, for sure.
