Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Eagle

Commander
Red Shirt
So who here has succeeded in installing this without any problems ?

I've tried installing it from Windows Update and also from the stand alone installer which is quite a hefty download. I've tried closing all non-essential processes before installing as well as following the troubleshooting guide at: http://support.microsoft.com/Kb/947366

No matter which update method I use I get this error, "Service Pack did not install, Reverting changes." - nice one Microsoft, but can you program your OS to tell us WHY it did not install :scream:?!

At least when I use the stand alone installer I get an error code 0x80004005 ( why not for Windows Update version though ? ) and a link to that web page ^ above. I've tried all the methods and used System Mechanic 7 to look for problems. No joy.

So far it looks as if I might have to do a clean install of Vista before adding Service Pack 1 but I'd rather avoid that since I've just nicely got my system set up the way I like it. Even if I do a clean install, its not forced to make the Service Pack complete it's installation. Although I've created a Hard disk image with Acronis True Image Home 11 on my external drive I can always recover my current set-up if the clean install doesn't work. But it's going to take a lot of time and I've just spent many hours with it already.

Most of the drivers are up to date and I've just updated the few that aren't , so I'm going to give it one more try. If it fails it looks as though I'm going to have to pay a visit to the Dell forums and ask there. Dell will charge me a fee if I ring them which I found out after sending them an email - their under warranty technical support only applies to hardware you see. I came here first since I was just browsing the forums anyway and was hoping if anyone here has had this problem and successfully solved it ?

I know I might have to wait for a "Tool" to show up on Windows Update that might fix the problem but after checking that for the past couple of days no such tool has shown up yet.

I might have to wait for new drivers to be written but surely these would've been developed during the release candidates of SP1 ?

Aside from this I'm not having a bad experience with Vista, on the whole, although I've spoken to and heard of many people who hate it.

You tried disabling any anti-virus/security software? That can bugger updates.

Not initially, but when I booted in to Safe Mode the security suite wasn't started. What I could try, just to be on the safe side is uncheck the suite for start-up with Windows and try it that way - it's worth a go !

I'll keep posting because this might be useful to someone in the future, thanks for the reply !

D'oh ! Actually, when I ended all the processes that time, I closed down the Security Suite as well.

I installed it the day it was released, not one problem with it. In fact, Vista feels a bit snappier, and I love my LAN browing and file transfer speed improvements. Vista x64 Ultimate SP1 here.

RE: Brent

Vista Ultimate x64 eh, well I only have Home Premium 32-bit but it does the job for me. I like how I have the option to upgrade to Ultimate at any time through the internet if the need arises though, neat little feature.

I installed it with no problem, too (Vista Home Premium).

However...

My laptop (brand new, btw) is taking noticeably longer to boot. However, once booted, I'm flyin'.

Yeah, I've been runing Vista x64 Ultimate since last summer, and I'm a pretty heavy computer user, I do a lot of multitasking and gaming, and I run a tri-display setup with a combined resolution of 4960x1600, so I demand a lot from my computer, and Vista has chummed along nicely for me. Sure I've had little issues, but nothing major, and nothing that has made me want to go back to XP. SP1 overall has improved my experience even more so far.

After I used the OS recovering disc to fix my current systems files I noticed it takes a longer to boot.

Wish I could help! I can't even get Windows Update working. Every time I go to the MS website, I get an error.

I had a similar problem with XP a long while back, I wish i could remember what I did to resolve it. You could always type in the error number or the message that comes with it in to the windows support website - that's what I have done in the past.

I invested in a widescreen 22" display which was on offer at the time but I think having a tri-display would be great - I spend time on Microsoft Flight Simulator X and 2004: Century of flight here and there but currently game on my Xbox 360. Must say that PC games are better, especially the strategy games. I tend to play games like Oblivion, Halo 1 and GTA San Andreas on that at the moment - I buy games when they come down to £18 or less.

After reading the improvements with Vista SP1 I am doing my best to get the thing on my system ASAP :).

Nope, it won't even install in Safe Mode.

Bah ! Dell forums, here I come !

No program can installed or removed with windows in safe mode - the installer service won't run.

This is a major major pain in the arse.

Running the installer while in the safe mode used to be the only way your could rmove a program that was causing problems when the system was running fully.

RE: Marc

Vista Safe mode, I guess some things get worse not better.

I told my Dad, who has a Vista upgrade DVD that came with his Windows XP Media Center 2003 Edition, about my problems so far and he's completely put off with upgrading - basically said MS can now "shove it" because he's completely happy with XP. The last time I tried Vista on his PC we had nothing but problems and couldn't even connect to the internet. I'm sure that his router will now be supported, but he doesn't want to bother - his friends don't rate Vista either.

Just read two replies on the Dell forum regarding my problem - they are experiencing the same. One said that Vista is becoming tiresome because of time spent troubleshooting.

So far, it looks like a clean install is the only way - but I'll hold out for a while.

Someone has posted a suggestion on the Dell forum I posted above which worked for him - I'm backing up all my user files in order to get ready for a clean install if it doesn't work.
