While it did manage to attract a new audience, it often felt like it was trekking too far from the path that Gene Roddenberry originally charted. And so, dear readers, we find ourselves in a galaxy of mixed feelings. From unnecessary story arcs and overpowered technology to poor character development and heavy-handed messaging
Respectfully, I will completely disagree on this. Star Trek was know for its overly heavy handed messaging, from "Let that be our Last Battlefield" as a classic example, but even in TNG with its anti-drug PSA as part of the plot line.

One aspect that I think needs to be kept in mind with Discovery is that it isn't like TNG going forward Star Trek. It is far more in line with TOS style Star Trek which had overpowered technology of the week, it had random extras showing up gaining more importance than people like Sulu or Uhura.

Discovery had inconsistent writing, and that is especially evident in Season 1 to Season 2, but the messaging was in line with what TOS brought forward with the galaxy being a more wild and wooly place.

It's closer in line with what I fell in love with in Star Trek than I would say something like TWOK.

I think of myself as a hardcore fan of Star Trek which I’ve watched since the early 1970’s. My Mom watched Star Trek with my Dad when it originally aired while she was pregnant so you could say I’ve watched since I was in the womb. But I digress.

I can only speak for myself but Disco definitely impressed me. It’s a general statement that I think is inaccurate. A lot of people love Disco and a lot don’t. It suppose that everyone that is hardcore was unimpressed. I don’t think it’s true. Maybe “many” should be in the title somewhere.

I'm as hardcore as they get. And while I will say that Disco was a flawed series, I do not consider it a failure by any means. I mean, the fact that it launched a new era of the franchise which is still going seven years later with multiple new shows with more to come plus a TV movie proves it hasn't failed in any manner at all.
it often felt like it was trekking too far from the path that Gene Roddenberry originally charted.
And that's where you lose me. The path Roddenberry originally charted is very different from the dogma that gets labeled as "Gene's Vision" these days, which is primarily TNG related anyway. Maybe Disco does go against the dogmatic Gene's Vision of TNG, but so what? Most forms of entertaining storytelling do.

The path Roddenberry originally charted in TOS is that Star Trek was to be an action show where the priority was to keep an audience entertained. Which Disco has largely succeeded at, despite the occasional missteps and stumbles.
