Why No Love For Zoe?

Aike

Commander
Red Shirt
Come on, one of the best things in the movie is Zoe Saldana. She is hot and a great actress. She was great in The Terminal. She was fabulous in Guess Who. And she was fantastic as Uhura.

Damn it, she should be one of the big stars in Hollywood.

??? There's love for Zoe. Who said there wasn't?
She was one of the highlights for me.

Ummm no. What Kool-Aid are you drinking?

She's servicably attractive, yes. I wouldn't say "Hot." There were scenes where the lines in her face made her look 40. And they did nothing to make her look like Uhura.

She hardly struck me as Uhura-like (all of the actors seemed mostly like the characters they were playing, Zoe didn't act like Uhura at all).

And she's a "good" actress but not good enough to be "one of the big stars in Hollywood."

That's why there's no love for her. She didn't stand out in any meaningful way beyond peeling off her tunic.

^Yeah but how is Uhura supposed to really act? The character as we saw her onscreen through 79 episodes and 6 films was barely explored, we never even knew her first name. She likes to sing, and said "hailing frequencies open" a lot, but what else? Uhura was an important character but we never knew her.

We know she didn't seem overly bright, the way she was written... Perhaps that's why some people don't like the new Uhura? Because she seems intelligent?

Funny, I feel the same way about her character in this movie. Just sits in the background watching the guys do their thing while answering phone calls. Sure, she's the love interest to Spock, but it takes more than a love story to have an importance on the ship, which Uhura does not have.

This is not a stab against Zoe. For what she had to work with, she was wonderful. It's the lack of importance of her character that brings it down.

I think this character started out great, but by the time she boarded the Enterprise she was relegated to being little more than an extra (there to handhold and kiss Spock). What a waste of a character’s potential. Hopefully by XII they won’t have her just sitting around making googoo eyes at Spock through the whole movie. Their relationship also needs some serious boundaries now that they are working together as a crew.

I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. Uhura has quite a lot of pivotal scenes in the movie, mostly with Pine and Quinto. She goes through more emotional states than any other character except Kirk. She even has her own mini-story arc. I honestly think one could argue that she's more prominent than McCoy. What she did on the bridge really doesn't matter.

I do agree with the change from Starfleet Academy to when the crew gets aboard Enterprise. She was really a confident and very independent person before, and when she got aboard, I just felt that she was a little different.

I really liked the long hair she had in this movie. It was one of the many things that made Uhura Zoe's and served as a nice update to the character.

I also agree with what's been said so far. Her part was pretty substantial and she's been well recieved by fans. She was a highlight of the movie and I don't have any complaints.

One of the best moments in the movie have been her presence, and what an upgrade from Uhura from the past! Not only is she gorgeous, but she has moxie, intelligence, and compassion on full display. I look forward to her character development in future sequels. Hur-rah!

I think that Uhura's portrayal in this movie is a big step backward for women in Trek. After characters like Janeway, Kira, Jadzia Dax, and even 7 of 9, it's disappointing to see the main female character reduced to the background once the actual ship-based mission starts.

I agree.

This Uhura had to be made to represent the modern woman, smart & independant but yet still passionate and feminine. Plus, she wasn't giving into Kirk's charms just to be a notch on his bed post.

JTK2009, have you ever watched TOS?

Check out the Spock/Uhura threads; she's there.

We should love Zoë -- she's the only one of the cast who really was raised a sci-fi geek. She loves sci-fi.
