Why did the younger Borg kids still have hair?

Six of Twelve

Captain
Captain
When they first encountered the Borg kids aboard the cube, the three younger ones: Mezoti, Azan, and Rebi still had hair when they'd emerged from the maturation chamber. The older two were typical Borg bald. It was never addressed as to why the younger ones still had hair.

I speculate that the in-show reason would be that hair loss would be one of the last things to happen before full assimilation in a maturation chamber, thus they still had hair because they'd been released prematurely.

For the real life reason, either the show didn't want to make head pieces for the kids, or the parents of the actors didn't want them wearing them.

Just another of those inconsequenses from the writers.

But it's possible that the Borg started losing their hair after becoming adult borg due to radiation or poisoning from those inplants.

And that makes me start wondering about a thing I've never thought of before: Did Seven have a wig after becoming a member of the Voyager crew?

It's possible, but the first time we see the 'de-borged' 7, in "the Gift", the EMH says: "I also took the liberty of stimulating your hair follicles. " So that would seem to suggest that she could regrow her hair, or at least, partly.

I think the Borg probably thought hair was irrelevant. :) It would get in the way of the implants and such.

Child actors have very strict constraints on how much time they can spend working. Applying the full head prosthetics to all of them would have probably cut significantly into the limited filming time available, especially on a rushed TV schedule.

I just figured it was what you said, that since they were still in the maturation chamber the Borg hadn't given them the full conversion yet, so to speak.

Because the powers that be didn't want them to look like chemo kids.

In Universe: their bodies were not yet as fucked as drones that have been drones for decades. It's not like the Borg bother removing hair. It just stops growing because your whole epidermis is decayed and awful.

Janeway, Torres, and Tuvok immediately lost their hair for the short time they spent as drones, so I think it had more to do with the kids being in the maturation chamber than anything else. For Janeway and company, having hair was likely seen as inefficient and irrelevant, something that might get tangled in their implants and foul their function. Thus, I'd think that hair follicles are deliberately taken "offline", rather than being a matter of decay.

Maybe the kids had wigs because they were participating in a Borg edition of "Hair".
