why did janeway and tom paris never develop their romance that started in "threshold"?

i believe that that episode was a truly beautiful one that showed the beginning of a romantic relationship! they even had salamander babies!

the fact that they got it on as salamanders proved that deep down, they had feelings for each other in human form! i wish they wouldve gone out with each other as humans and taken care of their salamander babies, and then they couldve had a human baby, though it wouldve been awkward to explain to the human baby (after it grew old enough to understand) why his siblings were all salamanders!

Apparently we 'evolve ' into a de-evolved like behavior so...according to them it was just primal hormones.
You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals...err...amphibians?

I always thought early Tom Paris had a bit of a thing for Janeway. He does some pretty heavy flirting with her when she shows up at the prison to recruit him.

Gosh I'm full of transcript quotes tonight, but I like the exchange in Threshold:

JANEWAY: I've thought about having children, but I must say I never considered having them with you.
PARIS: Captain, I'm sorry. I, I don't know what to say, except I don't remember very much about, er, you know
JANEWAY: What makes you think it was your idea? Sometimes it's the female of the species that initiates mating.

Glad to note that I'm not alone to see something special between Janeway and Paris. :)
First, both come from the same path (a Starfleet high ranked officiers as father, who is mainly manifested by his absence, work being more important than family
even if they loved their children and were proud of them but were maybe unable to demonstrate their feelings).
Second, their personalities are very similar and complex: serious, passionate, perky, bright, with a player's attitude, process their feeling internally (with their own insecurities, vulnerabilities and rough edges). Both are supportive understanding and really care about others. goofy, A mixing of goofness.
Third, they like, respect and even admire each other each other for the force and/or the talent which emerge from them.

-> I don't think Paris choice of Janeway as mate (and vice versa) in Threshold was a total accident.
-> we know that with Janeway's principle not to engage a romantic/sexual relationship with one of her subordinate, nothing could have happened between those two during the journey in the DQ (if not the finding that there was more than just a friendly relationship) but why not after? ;)
You can find some lovely J/P fanfictions (some are very adult but well, the idea is there).
-> the good relations between the two actors were evident and clearly lasted until the end.

If that's not a wink...

So, what is accepted for Chakotay/Seven (aka the age gap), is NOT for Janeway/Paris.... Why?
-> it seems to me that 7 was younger than Paris, right?!

People always complain about Padme and Anakin, where Padme was 5 years older, but never about Han and Leia, where Han was at least 13 years older.

It's okay when the man is older.

And the writing isn't shitty.

But really? An abduction and a lizard booty call isn't exactly what I'd consider the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I like J/P just fine (it's not my very favorite pair, but I like it; I posted a couple J/P fics on JuPiter Station, back in the day), because I did see some chemistry there, but the events of "Threshold" would have made a questionable-at-best start for a relationship. If nothing else, Janeway having been forcibly abducted would qualify as, at the least, dubious consent. (Not that I'm accusing Paris of anything evil, as he was plainly out of his right mind.)

Dear God if I developed a romance with everyone I found attractive or flirted with a little, I'd be....er....busy?

Flirtations and passing sexual tension, especially in the workplace, are common as sand. Only a tiny fraction ever get pursued by either party or actually become relationships

Chakotay/Seven is accepted? Jesus, I've heard the man literally called a child molester for pursuing Seven -- or, more accurately, being amenable to her pursuit of him! To be sure, that has more to do with her relative inexperience than her actual age. Nonetheless, poor example.

*edit*
I was thinking that when people were for the doc/seven or Seven/ Janeway.
Robbie is 8 years younger than Kate but Paris is said to be approx 10 years younger than Janeway so...yeah that is a double standard.
Seven was approx 27 in season 7 and Chakotay was 42 so not as big a gap. However, the actors who play C/7 are 14 yrs apart. Adds to the icky factor for some.
Anyway, it is a moot point for me because frankly, if I could ship it would be JC for me. but I understand why it wouldn't work (cannon speaking. Not book speaking)

I seem to recall Janeway and Chakotay on the verge of getting into the same bathtub, lol.
But seriously, I think it would have been a GREAT episode for Voyage to come across Janeway and Paris' great, great, great lizard-grandchildren who had somehow evolved into intelligent lizards who were capable of communication and exhibited some traits of their great, great, great grandparents. That would be a fun one to write!
