Which books in the "Fate of the Jedi" should I read/avoid?

I finished the LOTF series awhile back and (slowly) read through the first book in the "Fate of the Jedi" series- "Outcast" but I've been somewhat tentative about moving forward. "Outcast" was pretty enjoyable-I loved the Jaina/Jag interaction and the "jail break" at the end of the book- but I don't understand the central point of the storyline arc- which is Luke/Ben being exiled from Coruscant and sent traveling throughout the galaxy to figure out why Jacen became a Sith Lord in the previous series, particularly when the reasoning behind it seemed pretty well fleshed out in LOTF. I mean, was there REALLY something more to the fact that Jacen was (largely) led astray by Lumiya and, if we are to believe her, Vergere in the NJO series? Which of the books released so far- post-"Outcast" should I read/avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well it's a 9 book series with no recaps so I really wouldn't recommend skipping books.

That said, #2 was extremely superfluous. It was literally half a book with all the relevant action taking place in #3. Also, poorly written. I've only read the first four so far (five are released) and I liked 3 and 4 and 1 showed promise, but 2 was a total waste of space.

(probably going to get hell for this) I'd say avoid them all. I've tried to pick them up off and on as they've been released. I usually take 'em back to the store and get my money back. There's just something...I can't really put my finger on it, a spark (I guess) that isn't there.

I heard some negative reviews on the Force Cast about "Omen". I have read part 1 of a 4 part short story series ("The Lost Tribe of the Sith") that I believe ties into it.

I would say all, if you're interested. So far, FOTJ hasn't had any strong standalone novels. Outcast sets everything up. Omen introduces some key characters/antagonists. So does Abyss. If you had to skip a novel, it could probably be the fourth one, Backlash. Though I recommend reading it because of the character development. I also don't think Allies, the fifth book should be missed. A lot of important things, relatively speaking, occur in this book. Personally, Allies has been my favorite so far. There's also the Lost Tribe of the Sith e-stories, written by Johnathan Jackson Miller I believe, which serve as a prequel to the events. I haven't read those.

I will say that that FOTJ seems to flounder a little in terms of what the central theme/narrative/rationale is. It shifts and a whole new subplot starts in Backlash that blossoms in Allies and might become the central story for the remainder of the series. Unlike NJO or LOTF, FOTJ seems a bit more scattershot. I think the new subplot would probably be better served in a series of its own, instead of throwing it in the mix here, especially so late in the game with only four books left.

FOTJ already had some interesting ideas-Force psychosis, etc., Jacen's jaunt through the Unknown Regions and why that might have led him to the dark side, but it needs to flesh those out more. Also, more work needs to be done with Jaina. I really think the writers should've done a better job setting her up as Luke's immediate successor in LOTF. But she seems to be a secondary character yet again in FOTJ. The writers only seem to find something to write about her, in relation to her relationship with Jagged Fel. She's the Sword of the Jedi for goodness sakes. I would think that would be something like the Mace Windu of the NJO. She should be having a lot more badass adventures. To be fair, Jaina does get some face time throughout the series, in fact more than in LOTF IMO. I thought LOTF really focused on her more at the end. But even with FOTJ, she's only starts showing her skills in Backlash and Allies, to a lesser extent.

I too am one who will advise not to pick them up...I've tried the first two and they felt really flat and devoid of any real interest. Not really been this disappointed in a Star Wars series in a long time.

The story didn't really start until #3 and it has some very intriguing possibilities. I'm looking forward to reading #5 when I finally get around to it. It looks like it's going to explain the one big lingering mystery left in the Star Wars Galaxy.

kinda slow/lumbering, but they've all be alright so far. Just get them from the library or something, or wait for paperbacks. Way better that way...

Even though these e-books are free, I wouldn't bother with them. I have read the first three, and they're bad. Didn't find them to be interesting at all.

Thanks. For the OP, one book he/she might be interested in is Crosscurrent. It's a paperback that takes place in different time periods, starting out 5,000 years ago (before the events of the e-books) and ending sometime shortly after LOTF. Crosscurrent is only loosely tied to the Lost Tribe of the Sith e-books, and appears to have no bearing on FOTJ. However, I haven't seen too many detractors regarding the book. I read it, and its not a bad read that sets up a lot of interesting possibilities. The lead Jedi/main character is Jaden Korr (I think he came from one of the video or role playing games).

I read Crosscurrent and found it pretty average. It wasn't terrible, it wasn't great, it was just there.

He was one of Kyle Katarn's students (and the playable character) in the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy video game.

Thanks everybody for the responses so far. Let me ask my initial question a slightly different way. I'm currently a member of Audible.com and get 1 download per month. Are there any of the books that you would highly recommend that I bother downloading? I've seen that all of the more recent Star Wars novels- since LOTF- have been in Unabridged format(yay!). Which ones (if any) are worth saving some disk space for and which ones should I just read offline? I love listening to Star Wars on Audiobook and have grown to enjoy Marc Thompson's narration work on the more recent series (though whatever happened to Jonathan Davis? He was the best IMHO).

Oh, one other question about the FOTJ series: Has Boba Fett/Mirta Gev shown up.....yet? Or did he disappear along with Traviss? I loved LOTF:Bloodlines but after that I felt that in the rest of the novels that he showed up in (nearly all of them in ones penned by Traviss) his story arc took up a quite substantial portion of the novel and could've/should've been done perhaps as a separate short story arc. I was thrown for a loop about what happened to him at the end of the LOTF series and would kind of like to see some more about how that affected him.

Regarding Fett/Gev, neither have shown up in FOTJ yet. Which is surprising giving the amount of page space they were given in LOTF. Plus, I thought they were setting up Gev/Jaina to be either long-term friends or enemies. The Mandalorians do play a significant role in FOTJ, at least in Backlash and Allies. However, I think the main Mandalorian was created for this series.

I haven't listened to too many SW audio books and I've never downloaded any, so I'm not sure I can adequately answer your question. Now, would I pay for FOTJ? I don't think so, at least not the first two books. However, I don't think skipping books works with this series because of the lack of real standalone novels. I get them from the library for free so as long as I can get my hands on them that way I will continue to read. I spent quite a chunk of change on LOTF and I don't want to risk spending money on another disappointing conclusion.

The Celestials, the ancient race that built Centerpoint Station and the Maw Cluster, and then mysteriously disappeared eons ago.

I've only read the first book so far, which was...okay. Afte reading the reviews I've decided to skip the second book, but I haven't gotten around to the third yet. LOTF kind of soured me on the post-NJO era.

They were wiped out by the Reapers.

Hahaha....not to mention the emergence of the Sith and the building blocks to Legacy which was mentioned at Celebration V was indeed going to be told in the novels.
