Where do all the socks go?

I just don't get it, I have a pile of orphan socks in the corner of my room, their matches nowhere in site. I don't use a public washer/dryer, but they seemingly disappear on a regular basis.

Its sad, I've even had it happen when I've bought new ones, or with expensive wool ones. It really is a shitty thing, and it makes me angry!

There has to be a reasonable explanation for this. Its not logical that they just vanish, so please tell me, where do they go? Is there a sock eating monster or something? Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks

Look under your bed.

I once found a belt that crawled under there.

Before I read it, based on the title. I thought this here thread was about internet Sock Puppets. IE: Like on YouTube!

Well, as the tree said to the lumberjack:

"I'm stumped:confused:"

Where have all the socks gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the socks gone?
Long time ago.

My theory is every ninth sock manufactured is made to simply disolve in the wash.

Whenever I open the dryer there is a full handfull of lint in the lint trap. My theory is, that is at least one sock.

I have a lot of holes in my socks. I just assume the holes get larger and larger until they consume all the socks.

They are sucked into the same void as safety pins, pens, jigsaw puzzle pieces and other things that disappear go into.

In this void they are altered by strange mysterious forces and are sent back to us in the form of coat hangers and all the other things that seem to multiply in an unexplainable way.

The spinning motion of the dryer causes a small wormhole to form in your dryer. This wormhole leads to the world of the Sock Gnomes, who use them as funny hats.

Sometimes socks get sucked into the dryer's filter and get stuck. It's a good idea to clean filters out on a regular basis! That's how clothes dryers can set a house on fire.

Sometimes, I have socks get stuck to other clothes, and I don't find them again until I wear those clothes.

I clean it out regularly, but I never find a sock there!

...and that fire started because Beverly set her tail on fire.

Wow, all those clever answers - mine is much more mundane.

If you've got a top-loading washer, clothes can slip in between the washing tub and the machine, and slip down to the floor, where they will remain unseen unless you lift the washer and check under there.

Remember to turn off the power before checking in this place, as the Evil Queen of Socks likes to electrocute unsuspecting sock searchers.

It's me. I steal them through various means... and I replace them with coat-hangers.

Just a hobby, nothing more. All in good fun-- *runs like hell*

FBI busted up a sock ring couple years ago. Apparently there's a huge black market for mismatched socks.
