Planetary Nebula NGC 2818
The spectacular structure of the planetary nebula NGC 2818 contains the outer layers of a dying star that were expelled into interstellar space. Our own Sun will undergo a similar process, but not for another 5 billion years or so.

Nice!

Cheers,

Hubble's days may be approaching. An onboard computer which controls the science instruments shutdown on Sunday. A reboot on Monday was unsuccessful. NASA believes the problem is damaged memory and are attempting today to transition to a backup memory unit.

Hubble was launched 24 April 1990. The original computer, Rockwell Autonetics DF-224, is space-qualified with a clock speed of 1.25MHz and was used in 1980's. The computer has been upgraded/replaced with newer versions twice during Hubble servicing missions, the final being in December 1999.

It looks like there are six memory units with usually four active at a time, although it can operate with just three.
There are also three CPUs, a primary and two spares.

Things aren't looking to good. The backup computer, which hadn't been powered up since the last repair mission is experiencing the same memory issues, which suggests the problem is somewhere else. NASA is investigating if there is a power supply problem or with the Standard Interface (STINT) hardware that handle communications between the Central Processing Module (CPM) and other modules, or with the CPM itself.

The satellite is in a safe mode.

The Hubble replacement, the James Webb Telescope, is scheduled to launch no earlier than the end of October due to the European Space Agency Ariane 5 rocket not being ready.
