What Type of Bread Do You Buy?

Most people seem to fit into two categories: bread snob/lover, and other. I'm the kind of person who will buy what's on sale, taking nutritional value into consideration. I'll just get some pre-sliced loaf that can be used for quick sandwiches, or toast.

My husband, on the other hand, is obsessed with bread and I've never quite understood it. If we get a good loaf of bread in, he'll eat it all up with nothing else before I even notice that he's started on it!

So what kind are you? Bread snob or indifferent? Are you loyal to a certain type or brand of bread, or do you just go for whatever is inexpensive?

Anything BUT white. Do you know the shit they do to make flour white?

I love bakery bread, and I buy whatever I fancy that week. I have a lovely flax seed loaf right now

When I can get it: fresh baked, whole loaf. Hard to get REAL fresh-baked sometimes. And attempts to bake at home...not impressive. So I try to keep few of those "french bread" loafs from the Food City around.

All other times: white. I can't stand the taste of whole wheat.

My favorite kind of bread is Old Home Butter Top White.

It makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches, which is my preferred use of bread.

I usually get my bread from the in-store bakery at the local Ralphs supermarket. Egg bread, corn rye, sourdough, multi-grain -- ANYTHING but plain white bread. White bread tastes like newspaper.

Just last week I discovered a brand of whole wheat called Wholesome Harvest. It's made by the Maple Leaf Bakery in Des Plaines, Illinois. This bread is so delicious you could plotz.

(I am not an employee or agent of the Maple Leaf Bakery, and this is not a paid endorsement!)

Your husband wouldn't happen to be Jewish, Italian or French, by any chance?

I have given up bread. Since doing so, I now have near-sexual fantasies about bakery-fresh multigrain brown bread. And nutty doorstep. /TMI

I make my own :)

I got a bread-maker for Christmas year before last and haven't bought bread since. I don't do all the fancy artisan breads though - I have one recipe, it's a white bread but I add ground flax seed to it. Even young master trampledamage loves it :techman:

Nope! I think he's got some German and Swedish in him. I just asked him and he replied "mutt" so he apparently doesn't know either!

Focaccia bread is my absolutely favorite type of bread. I like to dip it in a mixture of olive oil, pepper, and mozzarella cheese.

However, for sandwiches and stuff, I usually use cheap hamburger buns.

I make wheat bread from my bread machine. It's cheaper, tastier, and I know exactly what's in it. When I buy bread, I get sourdough. One nice thing about living so close to San Francisco is that there's a ton of delicious, local sourdough available.

I eat only 100% whole grain bread, and I have cut back on it significantly. I have had no luck finding a low calorie bread (they're all 100+ calories per slice!), but I make do with what I get. I like really heavy, dense bread, the kind that when you make a sandwich, the bread is soft but very firm.

I've always wanted a bread machine, but it would get me into BIG trouble.

Before my weight loss several years ago, I ate just about any kind of bread that struck my fancy. Love regular white bread and HATE HATE HATE whole wheat.. I love sourdough and "rustic" type loaves..

But now, except on very rare occassions, I eat "Nature's Own Double Fiber" bread. It's 50 calories a slice and whole grain..

I am a bread addict which is why I don't eat it anymore. I used to love French Bread and sourdough baguettes. Sliced white bread. Restaurant bread with butter. Now that I am off carbs I only get 100% whole wheat and not that often. It is a brand I get at Trader Joe's but I don't remember the name.

50 calories a slice and whole grain? Sold!
I did a little checking around, and our local Walmart carries that brand! Thanks to you, I can now remove another 100 calories from my daily intake!

(or make another sandwich ;) ).

*hug*

Really? I often see loaves that are anywhere from 35-75 calories per slice.

I've gone through every loaf of bread at our local Kroger, and the lowest there is made by Aunt Millie's and it's 100 calories a slice.
Other stores have nothing like that either. I didn't get a chance to check the bread section at Walmart until you mentioned the Nature's Own brand, and I called up to our Walmart and they carry it. :D

I like pretty much every bread apart from rye bread, white bread and that thin-as sandwich cut bread, what's the point if it's so thin you can hardly taste it?

Loaf-wise, I usually just go for generic whole wheat. I don't really have a preference.

However, I buy French bread bagettes every time I go to the store. They're so good, I usually end up eating the entire stick in one sitting.
