What is everyone's beef with Rita? (Dexter)

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain

I notice on a lot of forums that there are people out there who find Rita annoying, unnecessary to the show, and a character that should be killed sooner rather than later. And all I am thinking when see stuff like this is: what the hell? Rita may not be as great and multidimensional as Dexter but you have to admit she has grown a lot from the woman she was in the beginning of the series. From fearful and low on self-esteem to strong and capable of taking herself and her family. For example when she hit her ex-husband with a baseball bat when he tried to rape her or when she didn’t come running back to Dexter during their break-up and told him not to come bursting into the house whenever he wants to since they weren’t together at the time. She also grown to appreciate sex again. I know at times she seems whiny towards Dexter but her concerns and demands are understandable since she is Dexter’s wife and the mother of his kids. She would be a fool if she didn’t ask Dexter questions from time to time or have concerns about him working late or not telling her that the car accident he got into this season was worst than he admitted. Remember, she doesn’t know about Dexter’s secret so she wouldn’t know if she’s getting in the way of his extracurricular activities or not. Only what Dexter tells her is all she knows and there have been and will be times in which that won’t be enough. So, to all those Rita haters out there, give Rita a break!

What is everyone's beef with Rita?

Because Rita puts Dexter in silly situations. And the show becomes something less than what it once was when screentime is wasted trying to find the birdbath vandalizer rather than concentrating on the season's heroes and villains.

It's only a natural evolution to the character... having him try to be a normal member of society (who happens to kill) rather than just have him be a static character. That would be boring.

Rita's always been one of the most interesting members of the supporting cast. She's vulnerable, screwed up, and one of Dexter's only real anchors into a 'normal' world (the other being his sister). She's not someone I've ever found annoying, really.

I don't mind her, though at times she can be awfully whiny. Bandsaw whiny. Nails on a blackboard whiny. Bu she's okay in small doses.

Rita can be VERY whiny and irritating. Sometimes I feel like she serves no purpose in the episodes except to complain to Dexter about something he did or didn't do. Essentially, Rita serves as an obstacle that Dexter must overcome and go around in order to maintain his role as "the dark passenger". Dexter is the protagonist in the show, and the audience wants him to sneak around and go kill people. Rita's phone calls, whining and complaining gets in his way and so the audience just wants to push her out of the way so Dexter can get to work.

I don't have any problem with Rita. In fact there aren't any characters on the show that irritate me. She seems to serve a necessary function for exploring Dexter's human side, and also as an obstacle for him to overcome.

I like Rita as well - I believe she serves an important purpose: she keeps Dexter from completely giving in to his dark passenger. I loved how she even overcame and stood up to her mother at one point. That was huge growth for the character right there. Whiny? Well, I guess anyone who's married can accuse their partner of being that way sometimes.

I like Rita just fine. Her existence helps emphasize the extremes of Dexter's psyche anyway, so to me she is a vital component to the story.

At times she makes Dexter look like a normal well adjusted person. I don't really like her, my wife absolutely can't stand her and hates her as a person.

^This.

She serves an important dramatic purpose. I don't like or dislike her. She's a normal wife, overwhelmed with three kids and a husband who is hardly ever home. I think the fact that Dexter actually has an emotional investment in her and the kids says volumes about the complexity of his nature.

Wow this is interesting!

I have never seen this discussed before but my partner and I both find her quite annoying, he much more than me - cannot stand her.

I thought we were the only ones who did not like her but it seems a LOT of other people feel the same way.

We have only seen the new season opener but one thing REALLY stuck out to me. With Dexter's high pressure job and the stress it causes, WHY do we only ever see HIM up all night with the damned baby? That seemed very selfish of Rita.

Don't really like her or her whiny kids.

I don't hate Rita, but I wouldn't mind if she died, simply because something major needs to shake up this show and send Dex into a tailspin. It's getting too tame and domesticated. I wanna see Dex really go psycho like never before.

And it can't be Deb because I see her as necessary to the show's endgame, whenever that occurs. Yin and yang, cop and killer, brother and sister, you know...

The only other option is Rita. Nobody else counts as much, well maybe Harrison but we can't kill the damn baby! Not even on this show. :wtf:

Its the actress' "breathless" voice that's annoying as hell.

My feeling exactly.

I like what that character adds to the show because it keeps Dexter from completely going all Brother Dearest on us.

But jeez, she can be a whiner sometimes.

Which is probably why some people don't like her. For them, the whining outweighs the necessity of the character and what she brings to Dexter's character.
