What is a Hyper Spanner?

According to MA, a Hyper-Spanner seems like a multi-tool, close to innumerable functionality like Dr. Who's Sonic Screw Driver.

IRL, a Spanner is just another name for a basic Wrench.

Anybody has any guesses as to what a Hyper-Spanner really does?

Here's a Replica TNG Hyper Spanner Prop.

To me, it looks like a "Adjustable Wrench" that you can manufacture today.

To me, it honestly looks like a more compact version of a modern day Impact Wrench.

A real-world spanner is a wrench.

There's a line in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) right before the asteroid field: "Bring me the hydrospanner!" [https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Hydrospanner]

Not exactly the same thing, duh, but terminology cross-pollinates, and I always think of that line in TESB whenever I hear "hyperspanner" in Trek. The Trek prop even strongly resembles the one in TESB [https://www.spotern.com/en/spot/mov...lcon-in-star-wars-v-the-empire-against-attack].

I always thought they could adjust nearby electric fields or beams so they do, or are prohibited from interacting with each other.

Kinda like an old CRT degaussing coil only techier.

ETA From MA:
A hyperspanner was an adaptable multipurpose engineering tool carried aboard starships. Its uses included repairing communication systems, relinking and bypassing the circuit boards of electrical systems. (EM)

Undoubtedly, it is for the careful securing or disconnection of those very special connections inherently required by FTL processors.

Sources for this conjecture include the old reference to "hyperdrive" from "The Cage" and "hyperchannel" from TWoK (and one need only reference the "buttinski" or "butt set" to know that tools get names that stick even when no one knows quite why) regarding the prefix, as well as Voyager's "Concerning Flight" for FTL processors being part of Federation information processing equipment. See also "One Little Ship"(?) from DS9 for unscrewing miniature connections.

The other work cited is my crackpipe, since I haven't checked the scripts of the relevant episodes for specifics on the use of the device.

The only other requirement outside existing fact from the thread is one of FTL processing during a time at least within a lifespan or so of the prefix's common use in the 2250s through the 2280s. However, I don't think this kills the hypothesis.

I think it's just one of the few indispensable basic tools for any 24th century engineer. Together with the Meta-Hammer and the Trans-Drill.
