Vulcan's school

I loved that school setting on Vulcan in TREK XI. I think they should do that here on EARTH, in reality. It would cut down on all the screwing around kids do while in class. Put each kid in an alcove, with a desk, and let the teacher walk above them, monitoring what they are doing...

the school system here in USA is so f-ucked up, that this kind of atmosphere at school could only help!!!! Sign up the Vulcan School Construction team right now!!!!

Actually, I question the merits of applying that approach here, as social interaction is part of learning for us lowly humans.

But in terms of distinguishing Vulcans from humans, it was an effective set up... emphasis on logic and learning, not interacting.

Although it was interesting to see that bullies are bullies regardless of the race, which emphasized that suppressing emotions is learned, not innate.

What a thorough, thorough movie (IMO).

I no longer think social interaction is as important as it was before. What is more important is that they get their education. And having watched my two oldest kids traverse the public school system and the moronic kids that they let into them? I'd like to see the ALCOVE SCHOOL SYSTEM given a shot....immediatelly!!!

I didn't see any Vulcan chicks there. As someone who went to public boarding school, that's lame-ass. Chicks, in skirts. Must have.

Alternative schooling already exists in reality but is often limited to being a tool against drop out which are reactionary to the strictness of normal schooling or students with a learning disability.

First: fixed your title.

Second: Rob, is this about the movie, or is it about (your perception of) faults in the American school system? If the latter, then this needs to go in another forum.

Sounds like a really bad idea. I find it when it comes to people, the moment you try to remove the "social contact" aspect, or even try to "push it away," very bad things happen.

Well..no matter...I liked the way the school looked. Very 'alien' looking, and you can't deny the results; vulcans are pretty smart. Along with the Vulcan Academy Science scene, when Spock turns them down? I thought that was a very cool set too...the movie, for me at least, really gave Vulcan a unique look that other attempts didn't quite get across...

IMO

How about a "chick" in robes? First shot of the school scene the very first close-up is of a little vulcan girl - long hair braided down her back.

Look harder, there's at least one young female vulcan schoolchild. Who knew? Vulcan schools were co-ed.

Rob, now that they've destroyed Vulcan...I have to admit that this is the first time I really thought the concept artists and designers did a great job on the look of the place. I loved the way the city was hanging under the cliffs, the school, everything. It really looked liked a scientifically advanced civilization, an alien culture, but quite believable.

In the TOS and even most of the movies most Vulcan settings and artifacts just look cheesey to me. I think there's something over on trekmovie.com about the artist/designer who came up with the look for Vulcan. He also did the design of the Narada. I hope they keep him for the next one - he does alien really well.

That whole section from Spock as small child to Spock giving the VSA the figurative finger is one of my favorite parts of the whole movie.

I liked the Vulcan method of learning too and I think it would work amazingly here on Earth right now. Obviously it would have to work differently since humans can't answer multiple questions at the same time nor work out answer to questions as advanced as that shown on Trek XI but the basics of it would work brilliantly IMO.

Each alcove could allow each child to work at their own pace, if they don't understand something it can repeat itself OR give alternate ways of explaining things, then at the end of it the kids answer questions to ensure they've learnt everything. Also at the end any questions answered incorrectly has the alcove go back to that section to teach the child again.

It could also use touch screen tech.

the movie concept of the planet was visually stunning. loved the Katric Arc in the caves in the cliffs, et al.

actually, this is the reason I am not completely okay with the destruction of the planet and no reset button. I mean, seriously, we finally get a really good look at the place in the movie (admit it, people, they showed us more of Vulcan in this movie than we saw in any series -- okay, except ENT -- or the movies), and it's... GONE?!?!

dammit. :scream:
